Hello everyone..

I have a question/advice about QF FF

I have managed to get QF SG and VA SG this year

QF: I'm seating at 840SC my anniversary is September 30 and I might not be able to reach WP.
VA: I have 930SC, short 60SC from Platinum.

I'm considering doing my all my next flights on VA to achieve WP.

The question about QF SC is: I probably won't be able to get WP with Qantas. Is there any advantage on doing my flights with QF and keep accumulating SCs? My understanding is that I will loose all my SCs in September (my anniversary is in September) and any extra SC earned after achieving SG will just go down the sink.

Therefor, assuming that all variables are the same (price, departure times etc) I would better off achieving WP with VA and just return to earn SCs with QF after ny anniversary.

Is this correct?

What are your thoughts

cheers

Ken

Apart from lifetime status, No. If you're going to fall short they are essentially wasted.

Going up a tier can also be slightly easier on VA due to the rolling 12-mth calculation which can prevent SCs being wasted, although once you earn a level, requalification reverts to a standard 12-mths

Im with QF for the lifetime status. Whether VA introduce it and apply it retrospectively will be a game changer, I suspect.

I would consider Platinum status with Qantas to be more valuable for various reasons (e.g. international first class & domestic business lounge access, oneworld emerald status etc.). But considering how close you are to Velocity Platinum, and how far you are from Qantas Platinum, I think it would make sense to go for Platinum with VA.

Another option could of course be to do all of your flying until 30 September on Qantas, and possibly add a few status runs in order to make Platinum. You could then work towards Platinum on VA after that, assuming most of the 930 status credits you already have haven't already expired.

I agree with you Mat. Most of my flying is on QF/OW due to my trips to South America where VA has no advantage.

Since QF resets your account after your anniversary it would make more sense to get WP with VA and try to get WP with QF after September ( I have a couple of international J trips coming up)

at an average of $10 per SC it would cost me from $3600 / 360SC with QF Vs VA $700.

It seems Virgin will get most of my patronage for the next few months

Any reason why you've split the earn over two FF schemes?

If you can't make QF - I'd accumulate with VA.

Amaroo 80% of my flights are self funded and non tax deductible therefor, many times, I fly the cheapest.

I have reduced my expenditure (with the help of VA discount many times) and/or maximise my gain with status runs etc. All thanks to this forum :)

You seem so close to VA Platinum it's almost a no brainer.
However in my experience the difference between VA Gold and Platinum for domestic travel is small.
There are the four "free" upgrades but you have to book a flexi fare to use them.
Virgin doesn't have a second tier of domestic lounges, like Qantas.
Your post doesn't say whether you do any international travel, or what that might be.
If you do the occasional trip to Europe then there is probably little to choose between them.
QF Platinum would give you access to the EK F lounge in DXB but VA Platinum would give you access to the EY F lounge in AUH.
However if you fly within Asia or Europe the QF status might be an advantage as it gives you benefits with OneWorld airlines rather than VA's handful of partners.
But given how many SCs you need for QF platinum that seems academic anyway.

Tough one - so close to VA you might as well get it, but as others have noted VA plat gives you barely anything especially for domestic, over VA gold. If there was anything you could do to get QF plat I'd absolutely go for that but doesn't sound possible for you!

For the 60SC Id run with VA Platinum, that will in effect give you two years benefits equivalent to Gold with drop down. I have been plat on and off since plat was introduced in 2011 and was gold before that. Honestly there is no notable difference apart from getting row 3 on booking as a plat and the extra few points. Gold is a sweet spot for me and I have been crediting to my wife for the past two months since equal Plat in May and she is sitting at 395 now and will be gold before end of August. Much better benefits for two people in the family rather than one.

I'm a rusted on QFF but for VA platinum status, I'd go for it. 60 sc is a no brainer.

How far far are you from lifetime Gold? That's worth getting for your dotage when you'll fly less and want more comfort, unless it's 'enhanced' as a benefit (sorry, couldn't help myself RedRoo)

+1.
Im no VA fan boy, although I too think your probably better off with VA based on how close you are to reaching VA WP, particularly if you fly in/out of BNE frequently for domestic flights.

International flying on the other hand may well give a different response depending on destinations and frequencies of international flying intentions.

As others have said you're so close to VA Plat you should go for it. However, give some thought to what you do when you get there. If QF LTG is an objective, QF bookings post achieving VA Plat might still make sense. Also, if you have some unexpected travel before the QF anniversary date it might get you over the line with them too.

One thing that hasn't been said is that status is only good if you use it.
So factor that in.
