QF Upgrades - very interesting situation

So my wife and I are flying internationally tomorrow however we are on separate tickets. Our bookings are "linked" in the QF system but for all intents and purposes they are still separate and individual bookings (i.e. when I login I can't select a seat for her etc.)

We both had upgrade requests lodged. I am gold and she is bronze. We both have enough points in our own accounts for the upgrades.

As it is T-24 her upgrade was processed and confirmed with points deducted from her account while mine is still waitlisted and no points deducted.

I understand the QF policy is to upgrade based on QFF status but this clearly has not occurred.

I have run the QFF centre and they can't explain what has happened. Their suggestion is to continue waiting and to call back if an upgrade doesn't come through.

Anyone else had this experience?
 
That does seem unusual. (Perhaps your wife leads a double life and is secretly a P1!!! :p)

Have you checked the loading for the flight, to see if there is still a good chance your upgrade will go through?

If your upgrade doesn't go ahead it will be interesting to hear the explanation from QF.
 
I am pretty sure she does not secretly have P1 or CL for that matter!

I can access the business class seating when selecting a seat (but it won't let me confirm a seat) and I can see there are still 3 seats available. I don't know if they have already been provided as an upgrade to someone and they haven't selected a seat yet or whether they are still processing.

QF said that worst case is that they just swap the upgrade and give it to me (which won't please the mrs and I probably wouldn't accept it anyway). But it still doesn't explain how this occurred. If there's no explanation, it does make me think there is something more to the upgrade criteria than simply status...
 
Did you request her upgrade with your points? I had it happen once as a Gold as well that a couple of Silvers got upgraded and I didn't, quite disappointing.

The one good thing is that it is her that got the upgrade otherwise I could see some marital issues, maybe QF is quietly looking after your marriage ;)

As you can't see the J seat plan if you are flying in Y, perhaps you are getting an op up?

I have noticed weird things (like not being able to select a seat) happening with bookings when I have put in an upgrade request - the weird things start happening a while before the notification comes through that the request has been successful.
 
Mille - no my wife used her own points to upgrade her booking. Maybe I should ring the QFF centre and express my gratitude haha...

ok very interesting now. i'm now able to select and confirm a seat in J even though my upgrade status is "requested". i can no longer access the Y cabin seating...you're right Anna - some strange things happening here

Don't complain, just select that seat!
 
Is your wife booked in a higher fare class, ie. paid more for her Y ticket than yours?
 
I was able to see the J cabin when I had an UG requested that subsequently didnt come through, so not necessarily an indication of success/failure of upgrade.

I'd be asking QF what happened (after the fact) if you wife's comes through.

If nothing else it'll be an interesting data point for QF to prove their system doesnt work. Of course, if yours comes through, this entire thread is moot (although still interesting).
 
Sounds like a slow upgrade email but maybe you were going to F and she was staying J. Happy Mr Unggg and unhappy Mrs Unggg:)
 
Like docjames I've had an upgrade request in before and able to see the J cabin and select a seat.

I was very disappointed when I got to the airport to check-in only to find I was still sitting in Y.....:(

interesting. did you lose your Y seat allocation and your ability to select a Y seat?

Right now I've selected a J class seat, my Y seat allocation has disappeared and my upgrade status is "Requested". When I check on checkmytrip it says "Confirmed from Waitlist".

I will call again tonight if there is no progress....

I don't think that matters in this case because AFAIK the QF published policy is that status trumps fare class if booked in the same cabin.
 
If you can select and confirm your seat, print out the confirmation page showing your seat you selected !

Same thing happened to me flying SIN-Mel once being able to select a seat in J but still saying requested, and when at airport i was still in Prem Econ even though i had selected a J seat. At check in i pulled out that print out and miraculously a seat had opened up in J for me to sit in even though before pulling out evidence it was a clear "no sir we are oversold on this flight"
 
which flight are you on? Is it full?
 
ok so a quick update on what happened. At 10.20pm I received an SMS confirming my upgrade. Prior to that my economy seating had disappeared until then but my upgrade status had remained "Requested". The QFF call centre confirmed I had an upgrade even though My Bookings on the QFF site hadn't confirmed this. Strange set of circumstances but in the end I did receive a confirmed upgrade and points subsequently deducted. Still a bit concerned that a Bronze member was processed before me which is not in accordance with the policy but the end result is that I did receive an upgrade so I'm grateful :D
 
Everyone assumes that the system allocated the Bronze member first because their upgrade cleared first. Is it not possible that the system allocates upgrades according to status, fare class etc., however the order in which the members may be notified of their upgrades (i.e. timing of SMS, or reflection in MMB) may not necessarily correlate?

There really is not enough data to draw any conclusions, unless RR advises. If the WP did not receive the upgrade, but the NB did, that would an entirely different matter.

I've had that happen too. Fortunately kept my original seat selection.
