My partner just asked me an interesting question regarding the usb port in the First entertainment unit.

Is it for charging only? Or is it possible to upload her stupid sitcoms on a Usb so she can watch them in flight?

Anyone know the format?

TIA

I think it's suppose to be possible, but I've never got it to work.

IIRC I think the IFE has a "play from your device" type deal. Apple-centric I believe so in theory you could access your ipad/iphone via the screen and play. Since I'm an android guy I've not been able to use it.

This was a few years back I noticed it. It's possible it may have been dropped if it never worked well? I'm not sure.

You cannot use the USB port to view your own IFE.
IIRC it's supposed to allow you to view photos but I've never been successful at viewing anything .

don't think apple centric. Have tried to play video from my iPad without success. Think I got pictures to work on a USB, but not apple format video, IIRC.

No you cant. I have tried.

I would not anyway because the resolution on the IFE is poor and you would be better watching whatever you want to watch in your idevice.

The retina display is much better due to its 400 pixels inch and 1400:1 contrast ratio and multi gesture touch operation.

The inflight ife is sh...ty compared to current idevices.

I concur, the answer = No.

From a reliable source on today's QF11

I first tried to do this from a iphone 3G - I felt the IFE screen would be a better option.

I've been wondering this myself.
There was an option to plug a device in the the USB port and play music and view photos through the IFE system. It does not appear to be there any more. The last few times I have tried to play music from, with the same device that I had used previously, it didn't work.

It came about when the A380s arrived and the 747 reconfigs. Appears to have disappeared ~18 months ago.
