Todays 5pm QF655 CNS-BNE has been delayed due to some rogue who misappropriated an "Exit" sign over the exit-row door. I could assume that this thief was not a status flyer and how the hell did he/she get an exit row seat?

The initial boarding was delayed about 10 min (acceptable) but after the apparently full flight was loaded the Capt said the sign was missing and it was a N0-GO item. I find it unacceptable that this was not noticed whilst the 738 was on the ground. Pax waited about 50 min on board stewing in Cairns heat despite struggling A/C before Capt relayed that the Air Services group (CASA?) in MEL did not approve flight under this obviously hazardous condition.

We're back in the CNS QP and have just been offered a free $15 meal in the food court outside, which is a bit of a saviour as the QP "refreshments" that don't fit in a beer/wine glass have all but gone.

Just notified that the offending replacement bit of plastic will be arriving from MEL and we may be headed south at 9.30pm.

I thought these things only happened on Friday.

Well that's just appalling. One hopes Qantas sends the police to visit those sitting in the immeidate vicinity of the exit row.

Dont worry, by the time the part gets there, the crew will be "out of hours".

Puhlees... How does crew get OH sitting in the terminal? I thought it was behind the pushy-buttony thingoids at the pointy end.

However we've just been advised that it will be indeed safe to fly without said plastic bit and may get away about 9pm local.

Sounds like CASA has authorised someone to duly fill in the forms in MEL on O/T to allow this "unsafe" aircraft to get away.

Did I mention my leave starts tomorrow???

Boarding yet?

IIRC "duty time" is from arrival for work to start the day (or night!), not time on the aircraft.

Darn, I hadn't thought of an emergency exit row EXIT sign as a wall hanging next to my "still unknown" Melbourne ARTIST who ONEDAY will become FAMOUS! Yeah - I said it, DAVE!!! Grrrrr

Phew.... I nearly lost it there....

What a bunch of wankers destroying QF property like that - as previously mentioned, I hope PC BLOG arrives tomorrow morning at their front door with a warrant and an invoice for the associated costs of their "misdemenor":-|

Groundfeeder,

Flight Crew have "Flight & Duty Time" limitations.

The basic Civil Aviation Order (CAO) is CAO 48 though most operators have variations, exemptions or even totally different Fatigue Management systems.

Have a look at:
http://www.casa.gov.au/download/orders/cao48/4800.pdf
and
http://www.casa.gov.au/download/orders/cao48/4801.pdf
and these may give you an idea.

There is no tolerance with these rules.

I'm a non status flyer and I just about always get exit row seats. And also, im not an idiot! Not all non status flyers misbehave.

Maybe someone wanted an exit row sign for their personal collection! Wouldn't it be difficult for a passenger to remove an exit row sign from an aircraft?

Straitman,
Just as my duty time commences when the cab collects me at 4am for the airport and finishes when it returns me at 11pm (sometimes) at the end of the day - but no limit.

Actually, OHS legislation does impose many limits. for a start not working more then 16 hours continuously, is a basic limit. This can be variously modified by giving rest periods during or following the duty. So, for example, if you employer had you in a cab at 4 am the next morning and the OHS police found out then your employer would have to do some explaining.

Would that matter if you were on the way home at 4am from a night on the town with work colleagues or starting out for afresh day?

Saw an interesting OHS matter at the Vivo cafe outside IAG today. We wanted to drag to tables togetehr for our party of 6. The staff wouldn't let us do it, quoting "due to OHS". They got two staffers to drag it...much safer.

Groundfeeder,

As I said there are many variations to the CAO and/or fatigue management rules but whichever set is being used must be followed. Whether you like it or not the aircrew and the companies have no discretion. It is law and is enforced.

Those who whinge the most about these things are also the same ones who will make the most noise if there is an accident.

I guess, the first assumption is that the night out on the town is out of the control of the employer, in general. However there have been some cases that have found otherwise - very much murky waters on that question.

Dragging table together :D classic. We had the umbellas come down at a cafe when the wind got over about 5 km/h for OHS. Just don't mention the safety of sun burn...

:D was that an euphemism for "We don't want you to sue us for injury if you topple over, so let us do that, okay?"

Probably. Same reason a lot of places won't let you clean up a glass you broke - if you cut yourself and get an infection, they could be held liable.
