Qantassource says several A380 "charters" were operated in the last few days

LHR-DXB-MEL
LAX-MEL
MEL-SYD-LAX
SYD-DXB-LHR

seems to be in place of the regular flights

what was the real reason?

Yes, I was surprised by that. I have never heard of a commercial airline simply switching a scheduled daily service into a charter. QF9 is not operating next Sunday (presumably a charter flight) so EK got $10,000 I would have given QF. Nice business model :)

They also got a guaranteed full flight, which is a hell of a lot better than QF9s long term yield. Nice Business model ;)

Do you honestly think they would make a loss on a charter? Puhlease.......

interesting was 2 A380 arrived into MEL as charter from LHR and LAX using the timing of QF10 and QF94 on Nov 25, then two different A380 departed on same NOv 25 SyD-LHR via DXB and another MEL-SYD reposition to do SYD-LAX using the timings of QF1 and QF11.

I wonder what it was for?

The exclusive brethren would be the obvious answer given the origins and their charters in the past.

Perhaps the Exclusive Brethren are finally using the big planes! :p

They were using them last year

QF 11 was also subbed to a 747 on 23 November about 2 months out prior. (We were on it) and we changed onto 93 from MEL for F.

They did similar about a week ago with charters from LHR amd LAX but no return charters.

i wonder who gets to sit in the premium cabins. And whether the IFE gets turned off and /or reprogrammed to more "appropriate" shows, whether special meals get ordered.

Whoops!

Considering their extreme conservatism, perhaps they could replace all content/not even run it, but that's a long time in a tube to have nothing to do. Perhaps prayer sees them through. I'd imagine leadership gets the front seats.

JB747 our resident captain has noted that QF2 out of LHR today will change its callsign to QF6052 after our other contributor Flyerqf noted that one of the A380 that usually departs LHR did not operate.

Perhaps one QF12 will change its callsign as well . The usual suspects?

The aircraft is being operated as a charter using the #6052. Displaces the 2 for the day.

QF2 isn't operating form LHR tonight due to the inbound QF9 delay. It should depart tomorrow morning instead. Perhaps this is what that's about?

Defiantly a charter for an 'exclusive' group.
