Might be worth keeping an eye on for anyone in the market for 2 (potentially) cheap J fares... Qantas 2X Business Class Tickets Choice OF Flight Midwinter Ball Charity Auction | eBay

Does anyone know if these flights earn SCs ?
On the terms and conditions it says they would NOT earn QFF points.
Booked into D class.

Thanks for the info, could be a goer. J flights to MEL-LHR return usually go for 9-10k each.

Wow they went for $12,300, that's pricey.
I was willing to put a bid in upto say $9k.

I've seen J specials to LAX return for like $5999. It is for charity though I suppose.

Best value I'd imagine would be to LHR. A380 all the way. Retail for ~$9k if you can get em cheap.

Haven't looked at the particulars but not too crazy if you consider it's June 19th and if it's considered a donation, fully tax deductible!

hmmmmm. I'd consider tax advice on that one. I don't believe auction purchases, even where proceeds go to charity, are tax deductible.

Wouldn't be deductible, but $12k for two QF J tickets to Europe or NY is not a bad deal.

Ah, good thing I put the if :) (and posted after the auction finished!)

Sorry, I missed the "if".
These auctions do come up and I hear people (in person not on forums) suggest their deductible, so still worth clarifying.

My understanding of this is that you can only claim a tax deduction if you've overpayed by 500% or more.

Tax deductible contributions - Fundraising

Specifically :

  • the benefit received by the contributor must be no more than 20% of the value of the contribution or $150, whichever is less.

So if you pay $10000 for flights worth $2000 you could claim $8000 as a tax deduction. If you pay less than $10000 for the same flights there is no tax deduction at all. (Edit : THIS IS WRONG)

Bottom line is that the tax deduction angle will not get you a bargain, since you have to overpay by a large margin to qualify for the deduction in the 1st place.

Edit : read it again and it's even worse because of the limitation on max value. You can only claim a deduction if you pay over 5 times the market value for an item worth $150 or less.

But since you don't get points or SCs not as good as they might seem. Is lounge access allowed on these tickets? I seem to remember something that its not allowed on certain tickets including promotional tickets.
