Qantas Y ammenities pack

Returned to BNE from SIN on QF52 last night. The pack consists of a one shot toothbrush and an eye mask in a little clear zipper plastic envelope. The envelope had a toxic smell about it which permeated the eye mask, to the point it gave us a head ache from the fumes. The FA a great bloke til then said yeah the plastic drones that and blew it off, no s@@@ Sherlock, but it's really bad.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does qantas care ?

I can relate to that experience, though it is not only isolated to QF. In fact most of the airlines are cheapening the amenities packs in all classes. I have a whole drawer at home full of varying types & qualities from various airlines, excluding the very low quality ones you speak of, that I leave as a return donation, unopened in the seat pocket.

The QF & BA Y+ packs are also in plastic pouches with the same toxic smell.

I take my own anyway to avoid them.

The J packs are getting a bit tired. I love Qantas, but a bit more pizzazz (?) is needed in this area.

I actually think amenities are a waste of space.

Although some people might scream 'budget/inferior airline/cost saving' I actually dont mind the EY approach of walking around with a tray and people picking what they need off it

The thing is so many people just don't use the items in there, that's why it's been reduced so much AFAIK. Coupled that with the fact it creates so much wastage for people just wanting to rip open the contents and then doing nothing with them besides throwing it on the floor.

Good idea.

I used to love the different pouches and these could be used for different things. Really have no need for eye shades, socks etc.

Happy for the cost cutting to be in the supply of amenities packs if it keeps the quality of other things up. Usually have my own things anyway, so rarely use them. Like the idea of selecting what you need off the trolley.

Perhaps QF can "enhance" the quality of the cabin air by removing toxic materials, such as the amenities pack?

Even CX longhaul (the 15 hours on HKG-JFK) don't have amenities pack in Y anymore, and I doubt anyone actually miss them. However, SQ Y still has a reasonable pack - not that I've ever used anything from it while on the flight.

Perhaps something like the below would work well?
Y/Y+: No packs, but parts of the amenities pack are available on request after take-off.
J: No packs given out, but components of the pack are offered proactively by FAs at the start of the flight. (e.g. EK's tray).
F: Give them the packs. They deserve it, I suppose, despite the waste.

It's not cost cutting as such, since all items are still available should pax decide that they have the need for the pack, or a part of the pack. However, it would certainly reduce waste - at the very least, I won't be asking for it.

Why are amenities packs "a waste"? You don't have to take them if you don't want.

Travelling with teenage girls (as I do) if they stopped handing out amenities packs full of goodies, the cabin crew would have a riot on their hands. It'd be like telling grown-ups that all that wine on board in heavy bottles is "a waste" so they've just got a big 50 litre bladder in the galley.

Having said that, the Y packs are so basic that I doubt they'd generate excitement amongst even the most deprived.

I grab them - simply for the toothbrush and nothing else. My nieces love the ziplock bags - they used to use them as defacto pencil cases. (Hmmmmm, come to think of it, maybe I can talk somebody else into using them for an emergency mini makeup bag. . . . . . . . . ?)

the socks are available..you just have to ask for them...they are bulk loaded and distributed on request..they were taken out of the Y pack because of the low usage by pax

Those socks are awful :-| They just feel .... wrong. Blergh.
