I recently got upgraded to Silver (thanks for work trips) and one of the benefits is an extra 12kg checkin luggage.

I've just do a dummy booking with Qantas, return Sydney-Saigon (Vietnam) with 1 stopover at Singapore. Sydney to Singapore is by Qantas. The Singapore-Vietnam leg is operate by Jetstar Asia.

I notice on the booking summary that I'll get a 42kg allowance on the SYD-SIN flight , but only 30kg on SIN-SGN (Vietnam) flight. Similarly on the return trip (same stopover at Singapore), 30kg from SGN-SIN, and 42kg for SIN-SYD.

So is that means I can only carry 42 on the QF flights between Syd-Singapore and pay the excess for Jetstar flights (Singapore-Vietnam)? That would be disappointing. I would assume the extra kg benefit going thru to the codeshare flight (Jetstar) as it's a QF ticket.

This has always been the case. Even when booked on a QF flight number the extra baggage awarded to QF Club and Silver Frequent flyers isn't valid on partner airlines. The same also applies to Gold and Platinum when on a non oneworld partner.

From here you have a few options...

Contact Jetstar to add additional baggage to your ticket. This should be able to be done by yourself and requires obtaining the Jetstar booking reference (recently though the QF booking reference has been working on the Jetstar website so try this first), visiting the Jetstar website and adding additional baggage online. For SIN-SGN an extra 15kg per direction is $24.62 when purchased from Jetstar so $49.24 for the round trip.

Alternatively you can just pay the Jetstar excess baggage fee at the airport but note this is much more expensive. From SIN-SGN it'll be S$20 per KG and from SGN-SIN it'll be VND 320,000 (~A$20) per KG.

Otherwise just don't use the frequent flyer allowance and only check 30kg.

Thanks. I guess I stick with standard allowance. I don't think I would need to checkin 42kg but a last trip got a close call at 31kg due to extra gifts in last minute.

You should be able to add an additional allowance online right up until just before check in opens. Most hotels, post offices and shipping stores have a scale and are happy to let your weight your bags, I've done this a few times before heading to the airport and have either rearranged weight or added more luggage online.

My wife purchased a luggage scale online for $16 and takes it with us everywhere. It takes up practically no room and is fairly accurate. Comes in very handy

Aside from larger trip I travel with just a carry on bag so I can never justify buying one... Yes I know they're small however space and weight is very precious (well at least to me... I've never been stung by excess fees yet - touch wood).
