I haven't flown QF International for quite a while now, preferring some of the better deals with Etihad, Emirates & Singapore etc. However, I arrived back in SYD yesterday on QF118 from HKG and whilst the flight was relatively on time there was no gate for us, so we were parked over in the cargo area! Not a big issue as sometimes it's quicker to be bussed to the terminal rather than walk from some of the more distant gates.
What was to become an issue was that as we boarded the bus there were clearly no baggage handlers or carts anywhere near our parked aircraft.
We cleared customs etc with no major delays, but it was an hour and a half before our bags finally appeared !!
Just to add to our annoyance the "Priority" bags were the absolute last to appear !
There are several annoying aspects to this saga, starting in HKG - there was a flight to SYD (QF128) due out an hour before our flight and it had a SYD arrival gate number (25) prior to departure ! Yes, we had a gate number as well, but it was gate 1 which doesn't exist. I assume that the normal procedure is for the airline to hope for a change during the flight.
It should be no mystery to Qantas that they had a flight due into one of their major (if not the major) ports at 1020 hrs and surely they should be capable of making arrangements to accomodate that arrival at a gate. Alternatively, if they have to park it elsewhere then they should have the baggage handlers ready and waiting to speed up the process.
The announcements in the terminal as to the status of our baggage were, at best, a fairytale or, as I suspect, just plain old BS. An hour and a half is just ridiculous!
The last aggravating aspect was that a nice little email apologising for the delay, within 24 hours of arrival, would have been appreciated - but no, apparently this sort of scenario must be unremarkable to Qantas.
There you are ( and it's a good thing I didn't get started on the quality of Qantas J class meals !).
Do any AFF members have similar experiences with Qantas ?
