I have just returned from a week-long trip to the United States. I departed Sydney on QF11 and returned from Los Angeles on QF12. On both occasions I traveled on the recently reconfigured Qantas A380 Aircraft. I am Qantas Platinum One frequent flier.

On the Sydney to Los Angeles leg I flew in economy class and sat in the newly reconfigured economy class section on the upper deck of the Aircraft. The new upper deck economy section is fantastic. The crew informed me that this section was usually reserved for high tier Oneworld members.

I was provided with a First class amenity kit/noise cancelling headphones upon boarding and the CSM personally greeted me within half an hour of the plane taking off. The CSM asked if he could get me anything and offered champagne. I was constantly offered drinks throughout the flight and on a few occasions the crew asked me if I would like to order something from the premium economy menu. The upper deck of economy has a wonderful feeling of exclusivity about it and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I sat on the right hand side of the aircraft in the front row, the seat next to me was vacant. The toilet is in the far left hand corner of the plane and it is fair to say that the left hand side of the aircraft gets more traffic as a result of where the toilet is located. I would recommend sitting in a window seat as all window seats have the business class storage compartments, which of course can prove quite useful on long haul flights.

On the return leg from Los Angeles to Sydney I flew in business class and sat in Row 12. Approximately 20 minutes into the flight, I realised that my inflight entertainment system wasn’t working. After resetting the screen on 3-4 occasions with no success, the CSM informed me that he would have to move me. Business class was full and I was informed that as a valued customer, I would be moved to First class. The CSM didn’t have to move me to First but his decision to do so showed a real appreciation for Qantas’s most loyal customers. It was a classy act by someone who Qantas should be proud of employing. I will be writing to Qantas to inform them of the CSM’s actions.

The First class experience was brilliant. The food is not so different to Business class but the bed and privacy is quite something. The service is unobtrusive yet friendly & polite. I cannot fault anything about the Qantas First class experience.

I can say that in regards to Business class on the reconfigured A380, there just aren’t enough toilets. There was a steady queue that developed and the toilets were constantly in use. For those sitting in the forward Business cabin, there is only one toilet. The problem is that half the people sitting in the rear Business cabin come forward and use that toilet rather than the other two at the rear of the Business class cabin. I’m not sure what can be done about this, but it is an issue that will need to be addressed. I think Qantas expecting Business class customers to walk through the entire Business class cabin is a little too much to expect.

All in all, I had a wonderful experience flying internationally with Qantas and when it comes to booking my next overseas trip, I won’t go past Qantas.com. Qantas cops a lot of criticism, some of it is deserved, some of it not so. We should keep in mind that there are good members of staff within the Qantas group who want their customers to feel special and to have a truly wonderful experience with the airline. To those staff, I say thank you.

Not surprising in the first 20min (you said you were only there for that long) as half the pax change into PJs.
Note there are two forward and two backward (albeit shared with PE) in the new configuaration for 64pax.
Old configuration had four forward for 72 pax

Bur good on Qantas for such good customer service to a P1.
Economy one way/ First back - what a difference

That's an additional 35 PE pax for a total of 99 to share those toilets.
And IME in a full cabin it was continual red lights during all waking hours, in addition to the peak time queueing.

Welcome to AFF and thank you for a great trip report on your first post. Especially with the new A380 configuration.

Ah yes, Platinum One is definitely the "new platinum".
But, but, but ... I'm sure I can remmeber something about how WP1 was most assuredly not going to devalue WP???

I should note that I'm a WP, and this morning I few WGA-SYD and then SYD-BNE. The WGA-SYD flight was delayed by an hour, so I had to be moved to a later flight for the SYD-BNE leg. I was given a boarding pass in a middle seat (yay). I asked if there were any other options, and told there weren't. Of course onboard, there were not only window and aisle seats available in Y (where I was), but also empty J seats. I felt special. Probably a discussion for a different thread.

To clarify, I realised 20 minutes into the flight but was in Business for approximately an hour and 15 minutes. This issue didn't affect myself but as Sickeningthud noted, the red light was continually lit the entire time.

This is a situation where ExpertFlyer is my friend.

If I'm given a boarding pass for a less than optimal seat, I say nothing, go into the lounge, and check the seat map on ExpertFlyer. I find the best available seat, return to the desk and ask "would you be able to move me to <insert exit row seat here> please?". "Oh yes, that seat is available" they say, and I walk off with a new boarding pass.

Heh, I've done something similar before, but there was no time today. Gee, it'd be nice to be looked after, rather than having to look after yourself ... errr, you know what I mean ;)

Not feeling the WP love much at all lately - but enough off topic.
