Qantas extends current status Until at least March 2021

I just went up a status tier 2 days ago and received an email from Qantas stating that due to covid they will not be sending out physical cards for the short term. I was told to use the digital card which they send me a link for i.e I am guessing using digital will be the way forward.
My new physical card was mailed on the 29th of May and arrived today.
 
On the point of unable to travel, a ‘simple’ solution would be to retain / gain status on a pro rata basis. Eg if Qantas deemed 1 January 2021 as normalcy and say you you needed 1200 to retain platinum, then they should only required 1/12 per month of remaining membership year to retain for the next Membership year to (month) 2022. There will be lots of winners (meaning Qantas losing perhaps), but it might not cost Qantas that much until it starts to fully service/fulfil all the benefits of each status.

Maybe they have been restarted ? I am only going by what they sent me via email. Quote from the email below:

'We've currently paused sending out physical membership cards and kits until further notification. However, you can access your digital membership card via the Qantas App. To view, go to ‘My QFF’, then tap on the card icon on the top right-hand corner of the screen.'

Yes, some have had a 12-month status extension, but others have not, as things stand.

How does Qantas foreshadow the return to normalcy date, though? The longer you wait to announce the arbitrary date, the more anxious frequent flyers become about their status. If you call the date too early, you miss being wrong and again upsetting frequent flyers by giving something to a portion that didn't 'deserve' or 'need' it.

Perhaps somewhere like once 33% or 50% of pre-COVID-19 normal domestic travel schedule is reached, give a month notice of the transition period to the earning requirements for memberships ending over the next 12 months.

Well no, you're talking about the reality of people's situations not what was done.

Technically everyone did receive the 12 month extension. It just means zero to those that already qualified on their own(they got it, but useless to them as they had already earned it).

imo the thread title is correct. Each person's value out of the extension is what is up for debate.

Indeed. As someone whose anniversary date is February 28, I requalified for WP this year until Feb 2021, then received the 12 month extension until Feb 2022. So I am one of the “winners”. Luck of the draw date in effect. Therefore I have all of next year to requalify again. I know I lucked out here, whereas others did not do so well. I really do feel for those who effectively missed out, but of course I am happy for myself.

Who is eligible for complimentary 12-month status extension?
All Platinum One, Platinum, Gold and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer members who have not earned the required Status Credits to retain in their own right.

They didn't craft it to exclude people. They just recognise that the way they designed it affects people differently - and other parts of the FAQ show they have kicked that can down the road, and may or may not deal with it later.

Agreed. This, coupled with the following FAQ makes it clear, to me, that technically not everyone received the 12-month extension:

What happens if I've already retained my status, will it still be extended by 12 months?
No. If you’ve already retained your status then you will automatically enjoy your current benefits for the rest of your Membership Year for another 12 months. Status extension will not apply.
(emphasis mine)

Anyway, we're flogging a dead horse here. Hopefully down the track Qantas will look after those members who have retained their status themselves but who might then need help later with requalification.

Of course! You weren't really expecting Qantas IT to be capable of sending out different, personalised emails to different groups of people, were you? ;)

In all seriousness, AFAIK everyone received the same standard-form email which then linked to those FAQs for you to figure out yourself what applied in your situation.

Virgin still in death throes and barely alive but can always hope for the best so they can pull-thru. Have never been treated well by them when it was really needed.
