Had a bit of a look but couldn't find any recent threads.

Could someone please confirm it's USD$95/bag for up to 5 bags per traveller as per here? (@23kg/bag for a no status traveller)

Would this only apply to adult tickets, or could you also pre-purchase 5 bags for a child fare? What about an infant?

Do you have a booking? It should give you the prices there. Bags should be per seat, adult or child, but not infant.

The $95 cost is only if prebooked, much more if you pay at the airport.

Have fun going through customs!

not booked yet- but is one of the considerations for which airline to fly as AA and UA both seem to be usd200/bag.

and yeah we managed with 10 bags/boxes coming into Syd years ago but not sure how we’ll go over that way. Cheaper than auspost though!

I suspect there would have to be a SEAT purchased to be able to add baggage (I doubt a lap infant booking would enable it - but I'd call on that!)

Just checked one of our bookings ($120/bag, in USD):

But we have no children. The breakdown for adding additional bags is by passenger, so your child should have the same allowance as you ("same as standard allowance"), and their own additional bag selection in the manage booking.

Are you booking from USA or from AUS? If you are booking from the USA, Qantas terms of carriage are different, and have to provide you with 24hrs to cancel at no charge. You could book, try the baggage, and if it doesn't work, cancel.
In accordance with US Department of Transportation rules, customers who purchase a ticket in the United States for travel on Qantas may cancel their reservations and have their ticket refunded without charge within 24 hours of ticketing when the ticket is purchased one week or more prior to scheduled departure of the first flight in the itinerary.

As for customs, I've experienced that the more bags we have (coming into Aus) the less interested they are looking at each one, and typically pick one at random, if at all. Coming in with one bag, it was ask, xray, search, coming in with 4 bags each it was "whats in there?, have a nice day".

Going into USA, I've never gone into secondary, regardless of amount of luggage. But a redneck customs agent did ask us "are you two business associates?". No, we're husbands........ {blank look} - not sure how this doofus lived in LA and couldn't comprehend that one.

Makes sense!

do you know if travelling biz/first whether the excess bags can be 32kg instead of 23kg by any chance?
