Hi all,

QF/ EK currently have a sale for early-bird flights to Europe - and other destinations - for 2014. It is not surprising to see that the prices vary by destination, as airport charges etc. come into play. However, I don't quite understand why flights to some cities are so much more expensive than others?!?

My example would be Dusseldorf, an airport that is very conveniently located for me: flights there show up about $350 more expensive (Y, return, ex Sydney) than Munich or Frankfurt, and this is across multiple weeks and appears to be the rule rather than the exception. Flights to other cities that suit me, such as Amsterdam, are even cheaper than Frankfurt, however I guess that Germany's departure tax comes into play there. By the way, the same goes for Dubai as a destination, where flights are often priced the same or higher compared to flights to Europe, however I think that has been discussed previously.

So my question is, why are some locations priced higher than others, particularly in the same country? It might be demand or competition but I am hoping that someone knows an answer to this, as I am really intrigued. Any ideas would be great, thanks in advance...

Taxes, landing fees, government fees, local government fees, airport fees, security fees, fuel fines, supply and demand, capacity etc etc!

I think whats even more confusing is why are the QF flights to DXB around $1800-1900 return, yet you can fly to Dublin / Milan etc for around $1500-1600 despite having to fly or stopover in DXB. considering Dublin is a 8hr flight from DXB, you're essentially getting 16 extra hours(rtn) flying for lower cost then having DXB as your final destination. !

That is nothing new - emirates have done that before where sometimes it is cheaper to fly to Europe than to DXB.

Many of these tend to be, or are higher, for a departure. But unlikley to be all the difference

When did logic come into the setting of fares? It's all "charge what we can get away with".

Exactly they will charge what people will pay, it's call market forces and forms the price of most things in this world. Most are just not as obvious than airline tickets.

Isn't that to do with QF having plenty of seats allocation into UK and Ireland but not into Dubai? There is more to this than just how many seats on the aircraft.
