Oh fantastic article ...... I hate escalating costs as one goes deeper into the booking and the ultimate slug is the Credit Card fee!

I understand they fleece you nicely! LCC stands for lacking common courtesy business model!

The last time I looked it was totally legal for companies to implement varying business models.

At about the same time I thought it was quite understandable that consumers had control over how, when and why they spent their disposable income.

When did this all change?

deploy drip pricing tactics only reveal the existence of additional fees and charges at late stages in the booking process.

The practice is illegal.

The Federal Court is expected this year to impose penalties on Jetstar and Virgin Australia for using false advertising to hide the real cost of flights from customers.

Well drip pricing is illegal, but I do have to agree, nobody forces the consumer to press the "pay" or "confirm" button if they don't like what they're presented with.

Jetstar and Virgin are operating totally illegal business operations?

The price shown at the beginning is what it should be at the end.

Like going to Woolies advertised specials don't go up as you shop and check out!

Interesting thought - let me see - quick call to Airbus - please Sir can I have a 380? Sure can - but you do understand that our standard price can and does vary depending on your personal corporate requirements. Would you like all Y seating or would you like to option up with a bunch of J and a small premium F section up front? Showers or no showers? Bar or no bar?

I think JQ still do. Not sure about VA these days.
Tommy Tommy Tommy - do you seriously think these mobs don't have the a whole bunch or really competent legal advisors that ensure they operate 1mm within legal guidelines - yes occasionally they might transgress - but that will only ever be very temporarily - IMHO of course.

I've never actually used Virgin, Jetstar or Tiger so, I am unfamiliar with the drip pricing techniques that are alleged.

But I know that when I booked Ryanair, I couldn't complain about something like drip pricing - as every fee and charge was spelled out in detail upfront.

On the other hand, when I booked my award flight with Qantas late last year - I was quite surprised to see much later that I had to pay extra for seat allocation - something I hadn't experienced when flying previously with Qantas, BA, Air Berlin, Cathay, Alitalia or Emirates. Is this something relatively new?
Regards,
Renato

Sorry sorry, they now pre-select every available option for you now so that you have to make sure that you don't inadvertently buy travel insurance or the like, but it provides an up front price.

I have no doubt they do have very competent legal departments... the problem appears to be that in many cases management seems to bypass the legal department.

Look at Qantas - massive fines for price fixing. Millions of dollars worth of fines. Plus fines for false advertising. Probably all avoided had they run matters by legal before acting.
