Hi,
I am moving to the UK on Tuesday 25/09, Flying Qantas and need to purchase extra baggage ie. another Bag checked in at 23kg.

QF9 MEL - SIN
QF3345 SIN - LHR (Operated by BA)

I have tried to pre-purchase online through Manage Your Book In but get the following message:

[h=1]Please review the following items[/h]
  • Additional baggage allowance is not available online for at least one flight in your trip. Excess baggage can be purchased at the airport.
Note: Different airlines charge varying amounts for additional checked baggage.

What are the cheapest options I have? Do I need to purchase an extra piece with both Qantas and British Airways? Can I pre-purchase this? Or do I just have to cop what I will be charged at the airport?

Also we are flying through to Nice, and have already arranged for the extra bag to be delivered to our address in the UK from Heathrow, so it will needed to be checked in with us.

Sorry if this questioned has been answered elsewhere, and thanks in advance.

Have you tried phoning the call centre to see if they can do it, or advise more than online. I know it's a drag to call them sometimes, I try to avoid it, but they can be very helpful.

The cost for one extra bag on on QF/BA combination of flights to Europe is $120.00 for up to 23 kilos if paid at the airport. If your bag is between 24 & 32 kg an AUD50.00 heavy charge would apply.

You cannot pre-pay excess baggage online unless all flights are operated by QF (QF metal) so no codeshare flights.

These excess charges have only been in effect since the end of may. Prior to that you would have been charged $60.00 per kilo so an extra 20 kg bag would have been $1,200.00.

Is the LHR/NCE flight alao on BA & if so how long do you have at LHR after arriving from SIN?

If you are on BA to NCE also you can ask QF to tag one bag to NCE then ask for the other one to be 'short tagged' to LHR.

The main issue I would have is having to clear customs with the LHR bag or does this drlivery service you've arranged provide customs clearance also?

If they don't it may be easier to tag both bags to NCE so you can just stay in transit at LHR.

I realise this is too late for our FF but has anyione used the services of Jetta? (they will collect your baggage and send it unaccompanied to your destination, the idea being you send it some time - let's say a week - before you depart and collect it when you land - I guess that would be from a designated area and it would then have to undergo a customs clearance (I am not sure how that part works though). I think how they manage to do it for a much lower cost than paying the usurious rates for excess baggage is they sling it on a flight which might have a light load, and it can be any aircraft travelling to your arrival airport. Would work well in this PAX's case

I doubt sending a bag through Jetta would be cheaper than paying $120 total for one extra bag at the airport in the OP's case.

Using freight companies may have been cheaper in the past compared to paying $1,200.00 at the airport when excess was charged by the kilo.

Yes that's true. We looked at it when our daughter was coming back from living in NYC for a couple of years & the charges for excess baggage were horrific. We were extremely fortunate as the delightful gal at JFK Qantas check in was so interested in our story (kid at 23 gets job in NY, has a blast, good old M&D visit etc etc) that she loaded our five heavy suitcases without turning a hair or charging a nickel. See, that's why I love QA!!

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply !!

Thanks for all the suggestions..

I did try calling Qantas but was on hold for well over an hour so gave up on that.

We ended up paying the $120 at the airport.. and got away without the extra $50 heavy bag charge (even though it was over 25kg) so that was all good.

We flew LHR/NCE with BA although we still had to collect our bags before checking in to that flight. We left a bag with the Excess Baggage Company at Heathrow. They were great, and delivered the bag on time to where we were staying in the UK when we got back from Nice.
