I've spent a few hours today reviewing my current choice of credit cards. Much of the time has been reading posts on this site which have been very useful. A big thank you to everyone who shares their experiences and knowledge.

I currently have an Amex Platinum Edge and a Velocity Flyer Visa with my wife as a secondary card holder on both. We only use the Visa where Amex is not accepted. Last year I put through about $27.5k on the Amex and $36.5k on the Visa. The Amex got me about 55k Ascent points (41k from 3pt/$ on groceries) and the Flyer got me about 27k. When I originally got the Flyer a couple of years ago, I didn't expect to go over the monthly $1500 threshold which drops points from 1pt/$ to 0.5pt/$. I then forgot about it and have now realised that I exceeded the threshold in all but one month last year - damn.

We intend to use my points for travel with Virgin and Singapore Airlines.

The Amex Platinum Edge still seems like a good deal for me as effectively I am getting about 2pt/$. I've looked at a few of the other Amex cards (from both Amex and others) and have not found a better one. The free flight is useful.

The Flyer is not getting me as many points as I had hoped. I have the option of upgrading to the High Flyer which last year would have given me another 18.5k points for the extra $160 annual fee. This year it will be even higher as I am now paying my childcare fees via Bpay (without incurring any credit card surcharge which I do incur if I pay at the childcare centre). I do use the 2-for-1 flights with the Flyer card.

My annual income is a bit short of the $120k for Citibank Select though that may change in the next year or so, so I'll review that option then. The decision would be heavily influenced by whether the sign-up bonus was still available.

So in short, I intend to stick with the Amex Platinum Edge and upgrade to the Velocity High Flyer. Based on the information above, does anyone think there is another credit card that I should look at?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I'm bumping this as I'm in a very similar situation (eerily so infact) and thread came up in a search.

Although I'd qualify on an income basis, I'm not sure I'd stump up $700 for Citibank Select either. I have CitiBusiness Gold (with about 200k rewards points - what to do with those??). I've recently closed my QF AmEx Premium Card because they wouldn't waive the fees, but I'm looking to replace it with another AmEx.

Any advice for Peter and I?

Your post passes my sanity check well and truly - with the non-acceptance of Amex you really just had to improve your points earn on Visa, which it looks like you have done.

This site seems to have the 10K Point sign-on bonus in the unlikely case that you missed it.
