Hi all,

does anyone know if the Travel insurance with your platinum card covers skiing?

And if not does Citibank have an option to 'top up' your cover?

Thanks in advance!

You should be OK provided it's not off-piste... below is from the T&C's showing what's not covered, of course you should take the time to read the full T&Cs first ;)

‘dangerous activities’ means your conscious
exposure to exceptional danger, unless in an
attempt to preserve your life or the life of another
person; during the journey and includes but is not
limited to activities such as:
• scuba diving unless you hold an open water
diving certificate or are diving with a qualified
and registered diving instructor;
• mountaineering or rock climbing, racing (other
than on foot), white water rafting, boating,
abseiling, parasailing, skydiving, hang-gliding,
base jumping, bungy jumping, pot holing,
canyoning, caving, fire walking, running with
the bulls, rodeo riding, polo playing, hunting,
shooting, archery, tobogganing, water skiing,
jet skiing, off-piste snow-skiing, off-piste
snowboarding, snow mobiling or any other
similar activity; or
• participation in any kind of professional sport.

Yeah Off piste is the weakness.

In japan, technically under the lift is off piste!

IIRC AAMI is one of the few companies that offers travel insurance for off-piste skiing.

TID, QBE, Insure4less all cover off piste. From memory, they all cover backcountry too, as long as it is guided. Insure4less will cover unguided backcountry for a large premium.

What's the difference between off piste and backcountry?!

Piste is a marked run on the mountain, within the resort boundaries. It is generally, but not always, groomed terrain. Smooth, flat, no powder, no hidden nasties.

Off piste is between the runs- within resort boundaries but its the fresh powder shortcut between a lazy green run that does wide turns down a mountain. It will have trees and shrubs.

Back country is off the resort. No snow patrol, no runs around and no lifts.

Side country is defined mostly by guiding companies and skiers but is usually treated as back country for insurance purposes. The main difference is side country is accessed via existing lifts etc, back country requires hiking, skinning or mechanised access.

Off piste is often outside resort boundaries or in unpatrolled resort areas and this in where a lot of skiers & boarders come unstuck when they have an injury.
They think that their travel insurance will cover them, but ...

(I have heard of mates dragging their buddies back onto a resort run so they will be covered. OK if it's only a break but who knows what could happen if the injury was worse?)

I agree that there are some different definitions. In terms of safety with insurance T+Cs, my definitions are probably the strictest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backcountry_skiing has more info and yes, off piste technically covers back country.
