I seriously hope it is not something as stupid as running out of fuel but I suspect it's not that.

I suspect the weather played some part (it has been pissing down here), and in any case the terrain is difficult and with a charter perhaps the pilot was unfamiliar in general with the area, which makes everything more difficult.

The place is in a shock. Not just a horrible crash, but football is the main thing here, and everyone is sort of at a loss today how to cope with this event.

I imagine it would be something similar to losing our AB's in a similar situation. I feel very sad for their loss but also angry at the possible causes and potential preventative measures that should be in place to prevent loss of life. I'll be angry if I hear about any cost cutting measures contributing to this plane not being in good working order. I do understand there are mechanical issues from time to time but many don't lead to this.

Although flying is deemed safer than driving a car - if you crash because your mechanics failed on your car you have a reasonable chance of living, flying on the other hand.....if you start tumbling.....:(. This is why I'm a stickler for my preferred carriers. Nothing FFP related at all.
 
Obviously there is a flurry of news here but it is interesting that the flight "technician" survived. Will posy anything local I hear for interests sake.
 
Reminds me a bit of the Manchester United Plane crash of 1958. Man U now when travelling by plane, splits up their team across 3 planes.

Torino had also been decimated by the Superga Crash in 1949.

There was also a recent crash in Russia that had an Ice Hockey team onboard with similar results as well.

Soccer is complicated here -technically it might not be the official "national team"- but it was in the finals for the CopaSuramerica-nothing is as important to south american soccer fans.

General view so far is that it ran out of fuel. Also rumours the plane was changed at the last minute before flight.

Given what we are hearing as the cause at the moment, it might count as the ultimate in cost cutting.
 
Plenty of speculation around the media sites including that the pilot was a co-owner of the airline charter company and the aircraft went via a Bolivia stopover rather than direct to Colombia as the Brazilian aviation authorities wouldn't allow a direct flight.
 
"Consensus" of rumours at the moment is that the flight had no fuel reserve, would have just made it, but got put in a holding pattern as another flight (Viva Colombia flying BOG-ADZ), diverted to MDE due to some "minor emergency". When the footy team pilot started to get really worried he failed, despite several invites, to actually declare an emergency himself, thus not allowing the ATC to prioritize him over the Viva Colombia flight.

Early days yet, but it seems that even in this modern age, the human factor is able to crash planes.

I read the royal family also employ same tactic, can't have 2 heirs in line to throne on same plane.......makes sense!

The "minor emergency" was an A320 with a suspected fuel leak

Incident: VivaColombia A320 near Medellin on Nov 28th 2016, suspected fuel leak

On Nov 30th 2016 the crew of Avianva Airbus A320-200 registration N411AV performing flight AV-9771 from Cartagena (Colombia) to Medellin reported they were arriving at Medellin at about the same time the VivaColombia Airbus A320 diverted to Medellin with priority due to a suspected fuel leak and the LAMIA aircraft arrived at Medellin. They (Avianca) and the LAMIA were sent into holds while the VivaColombia received priority to land in Medellin. The LAMIA crew, told to be number 3 for the approach, queried about the estimated delay, then transmitted they were commencing the approach due to problems with the fuel, then declared Mayday due to electrical failure and contact was lost.
