going to be in Singapore the week prior, and thinking about taking the Easter weekend out of town.

Will be with the wife and our 6 month old so nothing too strenuous. decent pool, good size room and acceptable food options inhouse/ within walking distance would be the main preferences.

thinking Malaysia because it's close, and the A$ appears to go far!

any suggestions and specific hotel recommendations?

TIA

Personally prefer KL. Much more modern - better choice of hotels and shopping etc

The Hilton or Le Meridien or Aloft at KL Sentral all fit the bill

Any decent hotels within Batu Ferringhi Beach or Tanjung Bungah would have pool, beaches, decent food. But you won't get many local options within walking distance and most places would be catered to tourists. If you want to be near hawker food, you need to stay on Gurney Dr. You would still get a decent pool and room, great views but no beach front.

I personally prefer Gurney as it is closer to everything and I prefer eating out of the hotel

if you want good penang local food i wouldn't stay on guerney
i would stay closer to the old town

KL for me. We always stay at the Traders Hotel. Plenty of restaurants close by and in house. Decent indoor pool with lounges and great views of KLCC Park and the Petronas towers. Good shopping close by and the KLCC MRT station is over at the Petronas towers

Might be hard with a baby in KL...

KL city also very similar to other asian cities, particularly SIN

Just spent a great 3 days in club room at Shangri-la Rasa resort Penang. Hawker food and night markets next door and room service cheap. Evening coughtails great and there were children there.

Would you go back again? We are planning a 4 week trip to Asia, flying to Singapore, and we have never visited Penang before. Thinking about adding a week here between Singapore and Thailand.
We are considering the E&O or Shangri La...

Yes I would go back. Have stayed at both. E&O is historical and a city experience with ok club lounge. Shangri la is a beach holiday great lounge. If you have time stay at both. Taxi between them is circa $20

Awesome, thank you. We were considering stay at both, maybe for 4 nights each. Or 3/5. Which room did you stay in at E&O? Looking at Premier room in the Rasa Wing at SL.

In KL I would stay in Bukit Bintang

Hotels, shopping malls , nearly eateries.
KLCC Twin Towers, Pavilion etc

Uber in KL is very easy compared to taxis

The E & O is in a very convenient location in George Town. We stayed there in about 1996 well before it had been refurbished, it was a bit rundown but a fun stay. The rooms were huge - with the bathroom alone being the size of many other hotel rooms.

As you may be aware, Penang has great food. Malaysians themselves go there for the food.
