Paid upgrade at the checkin desk

A quick question, has anybody had any experience with regards to Qatar Airlines and getting an paid upgrade at the desk at checkin. I have been told that it dies happen, we are flying at a quiet time of the week in economy (yuck I am never listening to my adult kids again). Is it true that you can sometimes get upgrade cheaply?? we are both silver FF members.
