On my recent trip to the US, travelling from STL-ORD on a discounted economy fare on AA, when checking in (using a kiosk ) I was offered an upgrade for USD $45. As it was such a short sector, I declined. I also I assumed I would still only earn status credits for my orginally ticketed fare, but still, being the US not 100% sure. So question is has any one experienced this before? And was my assumption correct, or did I do my self out of 50 SC's at the price of about $1 AUD/SC??

Don't know about the credits bit but one factor to consider is if you ODU to F you get free baggage whereas you may have had to pay approx US20.00 per bag if you staying in whY. If you had one case the net cost USD25.00 is pretty cheap to pay for F not to mention the accoutrements that go with it.

This wasn't a factor for me, as a oneworld emerald I can check in a bag for free. And for a flight that lasts at best 40mins, I don't see a lot of value in F - a free scotch and some warmed nuts, that is all. Seat is neither here nor there on such a short sector (it was a MD80!).

System-wide upgrades convert economy fares into 'A', which earns full F SCs with QF.

Obviously not relevant in this case, but useful to bear in mind...

No they don't. They do indeed book into A ( C for upgrade to business class ) but they still only credit to QFF as the underlying economy basis

If that has been your experience I won't argue with it. However, it has not been mine.

I would assume this would be not dissimilar to paid ODU’s with JQ. Some report that they get the business Sc’s, while others report they get the economy SC’s. It varies and isn’t obvious, but the rules state it shouldn’t give the higher fare SC’s, even though occasionally it does.

Not in the last few years . At one time it did credit as first class but since then I have seen lots of mileage/systemwide upgrades credit as original class and none as the upgraded class

I have seen involuntary upgrades post as the upgraded cabin
