I'm flying to Seattle next week from Brisbane for a 6 month work stint in the States. I have a large desktop PC I wish to ship with me, and have found the only possible Pelican case that it will fit in is going to exceed Virgin's maximum size before it has to be checked in as freight.

Has anyone ever used the freight service heading to the USA? What's the process? Do I need to call up and make a booking first? Take my item with me to the airport and see the oversize checkin desk? I am leaving from the BNE International, never flown out of there with excess baggage so unsure what the deal is.

The lady on the Virgin helpdesk answered most of my questions, and said it should be fine to check in at the counter as freight, but I'd rather not rock up and find out she was wrong.

I personally would not send it freight via the airport as they tend to charge quite a bit. When I went back to the UK for a period and needed to send some stuff there (that I didnt want to wait 2-3 months for sending by sea) I used Pack Send. I'm pretty sure they have locations all over Australia. They offer all types of shipping including freight by plane, but they tend to be better value.

we're looking at 700x700x450mm here, at ~36kg. I just had a look at Pack Send (thanks!!!) and they seem like the logical solution here :) thanks again!!

You're welcome. Just some further advice - call the Pack Send office. And if you have more than one Pack Send location or branch near you, call multiple branches. Each Pack Send branch can set their own prices. I found quite a difference in price between the Perth city branch and the branch 20kms south, when I lived in WA.

Why not take the hard drive from the PC and source the same model over there?

No single item can be over 32kgs for items as checked in luggage, would have to go freight.

Beat me to it. I'll bet a new desktop will be cheaper than shipping charges.
It's a full tower workstation, and would cost $5000ish to build from new, excluding hard drives.

Pack & Send want $700 to send in their box, or $800 if I put it in a slightly larger Pelican case which will almost double the weight! Don't think I'm going to be able to beat that unfortunately. Thankfully my employer is footing my relocation costs.

I checked the tower itself, with everything inside yesterday, comes in at 18kg, however the dimensions of a cardboard box the right size to fit, would exceed Virgin's limit of 158cm (width+height+length)

Really, must have some awesome CPUs and GPUs in it, even then I would strip the case, reduce it to motherboard and GPU cards and pack, then again its easily done by me given I have been in the game building them since 87.

ditto that markis10 - but after having to pack my entire house over the past week, stripping my case apart isn't high on the agenda, and I'm in Melbourne until the end of the week.

and yep, it's got some nice stuff inside :)
