Am looking for some advice on where to stay at Las ang airport, as i have to fly back about midday from vegas and catch the next day qf service through to new york.
Anybody have a recomendation for a particular hotel, also what could i go and see as i will have the afternoon and evening to while away some time, have never been to the states before so would apprecite some suggestions!!

Your post is a bit confusing.. you indicate you are overnight at Los Angeles (LAX), but you are looking for somewhere to stay at Las Vegas (LAS) and then you have "to fly back about midday from vegas and catch the next day qf service through to new york"??

The Marriott at Marina Del Ray is not too far away from the airport, and quite nice. Alternatively, the Holiday Inn on Washington Blv. Otherwise, there are plenty of hotels in close proximity..just watch out for the ones where the planes fly 50 metres above your hotel when landing.

I think he meant "Las ang" as a (mis-spelled :) ) abbreviation of "Las Angeles". Not everyone knows the airport codes off by heart :)

If you want to stay right near the airport then the LAX Hilton is as good as any. Great views of the planes coming and going.

It really depends on what you want to do while there - typical tourist things include Disneyland and Universal Studios, both about 45 mins to an hour away from LAX by car. The hotels often have shuttles departing to both these places. You can also easily get to other touristy places like Santa Monica, etc.

If you want to stay somewhere away from the airport, Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa (Orange County) is nice. It's about an hour south of the airport on the 405 (the freeway to San Diego) opposite a humungous shopping mall. Great place to shop and close to Disneyland too.

I did an overnighter at the Sheraton LAX Gateway a while ago, and thought it such a convenient location I stayed there again for a week in October. :)

(Mind you, at $115USD/night through work, it was easily the cheapest in the area too!)

It's a 5min drive from the airport, a 30sec drive from Budget (same street), and reasonably equidistant to Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Disneyland, Universal etc...

Not the nicest area itself (not terribly bad, just nothing much around), but a convenient location IMO.

My advice for a short stopover in LAX is pick one or two areas and explore them - i.e. Hollywood (bit of a hole though, think "Surfers'"), Rodeo Dr, Hollywood etc...

If you're after nightlife, there are some decent clubs in Hollywood, but they tend to close by about 1:30-2am on weekends. :(

Cheers,
- Febs.

If just an overnight stay we generally use the Sheraton Gateway LAX or the Hitlon LAX Hotel. Most of the LAX hotels have shuttles to get you to and from LAX free of charge.

None of these hotels are really close to anything other than the airport but Santa Monica/Marina Del Ray area easy to access via car or taxi. Great shopping, restuarants and Californian Beach "Culture" in these areas but I would do my sightseeing during the daylight hours.

Just the spot I would recommend. The lounge looks out on the runway, if you can see it for the smog, that is.

I generally look for an airport hotel (there are many of them at LAX) that is part of the hotel program in which I am looking to obtain/retain status, and will ensure I have dinner and/or breakfast included. I like the Embassy Suits as they have a reasonable breakfast included and "Manager's Reception" in the evenings, and large rooms.

You can get a LAX hotel for about $50 US for a 2.5* hotel using priceline and the bidding option. There is a small trick in using Australian credit cards, but it is worth it for the money it can save. You can also get a 4* for about $65 US.
[http://www.biddingfortravel.com] This site provides an idea of how people go with their bids, though it seems to be getting much less reporting than it once did.

If you've never been to the US before, you could consider a tour which would show you as much of the LA sights as you can and give you a taste of the city. :p There are all sorts of tours and some which are designed for afternoon arrivals with connections to the late night flights. (ie. Qantas) Los Angeles tours from Los Angeles Airport area, Santa Monica and Marina del Rey areas

This one here (Los Angeles City Tours - Sightseeing in LA and Movie Stars Homes Tours by Mini Bus) gives a taste of LA as we know it. Venice Beach, Rodeo Drive, Beverley Hills, view of Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame, Santa Monica Pier etc. It sounds a little rushed but if you want to say, "I've seen that" then this good be a better option than going it alone.

Thanks guys for all the great information,
will sift through it and take on board all the advice given.By the way what lounge can i use while waiting at lax for my flight to new york, i am just an ordinary qantas club member but am lucky enough to be travelling in F .
