I pay rent via One Rent through my real estate and wanted to know if it would earn points (using a Visa as they don't accept Amex). Basically I provided my CC details when I signed up and I'm charged rent each fortnight. Not sure if this is considered BPAY or how it works but seeing as my CC is NAB I can't check if I'm earning points or not.

Cheers

onerent - The easier way to pay

As of 01/03/2013 payments submitted via Credit Card will incur a Surcharge of 2.2% and BPAY will incur a Payment Processing Fee of $3.00 per payment

I believe direct debit to a CC is not BPAY so you should earn points. The fees are pretty steep though IMO.

I know, unfortunately this is the only method of paying rent that our real estate accepts so we don't have a choice. We end up paying $26 extra a fortnight in fees...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I believe under the RTA law in QLD you have to offer more than one option of payment
Just jumping in to echo this.
Your REA is NOT ALLOWED to force you to use a paid service. They MUST by law offer you free ways to pay your rent.
I'd be writing them a very stern letter... That's $676 a year in transaction fees! Yikes! That's probably equal to both your car and contents insurance premiums.

That's huge. Can't you just pay into the agents trust bank account? That's normal with other agencies.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it. Will be following this up with them tomorrow

Ex RTA conciliator, I confirm the previous posts.

What we used to find is the agent would then offer cash payment at their office, as the alternative. Perfectly legal but possibly an inconvenience to some.

As of today those fees would also be considered excessive for a large business (as defined). onerent might be considered a large business (for example more than 50 employees). I'd suggest contacting them to ask what the new fees will be, if they're not changing fees then report them to ACCC. Let the ACCC decide if they are a big or small business.

Called and the representative stated they are not changing their fees. Submitted a complaint with ACCC just then. Thanks again for all your advice, much appreciated.

Will contact the real estate later today about changing our payment method - frustrating that they never offered an alternative and I'm only just looking into it now. Been living at this place for 14 months so ~$780 wasted.

I think I pay $550 per fortnight all inclusive. It's not ideal but it works for now.
