Has anyone ever been to the Hong Kong Sevens and got tickets without purchasing a package deal? It seems that the only way you can get tickets in Australia is to buy a complete package of flights, hotel and event tickets from one of a small number of authorised agents. I'd like to book my flights using reward points and choose my own hotel. Is there a way to get just the event tickets?

You can try posting here that you want to buy them off a local Tickets - Concerts, Plays, Theater - Hong Kong Classifieds

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Be very careful with any reseller. Last year 2 of us ended up being rejected at the gate after buying from an Aus-based 'legitimate' reseller. Luckily we were able to pick up tickets down the road at a similar price to what we had paid /and was refunded by the agency). A group of 20 Canadian guys in the same situation were not so lucky.

I think you will need to do more planning.
Once upon a time you could buy tickets on line.
Now the best options are 1. join HK Rugby club. 2. belong to an affiliated club 3. know someone competeting. 4. turn up and hope to get a ticket at the gate (yeah right) 5. get invited by a coprporate sponsor...(.I wish)
otherwise the obscenely over priced packages are the only way to go
I went a few years ago when you could still buy tickets on line, it was a great ocacsion, and we stuck around before and after. mind you HK is a great place to visit even without the Sevens.
I also think AMEX has packages. BUT they too were a bit dear as I recall
