Hi all.

I have been reading many sites regarding this and all have mixed opinions..But basically I would like to head to the Big Apple in either November, or Early December at the latest, but was wondering If there is a low season in Hotel prices?? I have heard that all year round is the same, bit pricey around Xmas, but I guess I would prefer staying close to Manhattan, but a little bit out wont hurt I guess.

What are my chances for something around $150~night, 1 single room? I was having a look at the Quality hotels etc, or mabye someone can recommend a place?? I prefer something new, and I tend to stay at alot of Ibis hotels etc..here in Australia, so perhaps there is something similar?

Cheers;)

November, december are high season for NYC.August is often cheaper as well as february and maybe March. In 2008 there would have been nothing available for $US150 a night but with the GFC you never know.At that time of year especially it is best to stay in Manhattan rather than outside and commute.
As a general rule book a cancellable without penalty rate you are comfortable with then keep checking for any specials. If you are not hooked on any hotel loyalty program then it is always worthwhile checking with a TA to see if they have any deals.Otherwise it is checking places like Expedia and if you are willing priceline.

The end of November is Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November). This signals the start of the big sales in the lead up to Christmas and New York is one of the major centre of celebrations, hosting a huge parade (Macey's Thanksgiving Day Parade) and shopping sales. The day after Thanksgiving is often called "Black Friday" due to massive turnouts to the major store sales, often with ridiculous limited availability heavily discounted items.

So accommodation in NYC will be at a premium around the end of November.

I will be in NYC for a fortnight for the first two weeks in November (though may visit Boston and/or Washington DC as well) ad so am just looking into things.
Two options apart from Hotels that look ok in NYC are renting apartments (many New Yorkers rent out their apartments when not at home) ...or B&B.

Thanks to Oneworld Circle Pacific fares, I have stayed a couple of times in early October (2006 and 2007) and I priced - but didn't stay in Oct 2008, and always quite expensive (in fact I stayed in Newark once as it was heaps cheaper). By contrast my partner (again on Circ Pacs) has stayed in June/July a couple of times at roughly half - two thirds the price of accom in October. Maybe just lucky/unlucky, not necessarily following a pattern.

Be very, very careful with apartment rentals in NYC.Any rental under 1 month is likely to be an illegal rental and you could arrive to no apartment or worse come back from a days sightseeing and find your belongings on the sidewalk.NYC laws are different to most other cities and short term sublets are usually illegal. It does take the law a while to catch up but do you want to risk being the unlucky one in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Disclosure-My son owned an apartment in Manhattan and I have stayed at his inlaws apartment-this had to be approved by the board with stat decs that no rent was being charged.

Thanks.

If I did it I was going go through one of the websites that specialise in it (rather than says Craigs List) for some surety.

They do offer one week rentals though.

Again be careful.Sites such as VRBO do advertise rentals in NYC-they specifically state they do not check on the validity of those advertising properties in NYC.We have used them elsewhere in the states but i would not use them in NYC.
This is one area where checking the NYC forum of trip advisor is worthwhile-but if you ask a question about vacation rentals of apartments be prepared to be flamed by locals.
Also be aware you may read testimonials from people who have rented a certain apartment. However that is no quarantee about its legality and you can end up the one caught. If you go to the real genuine sites such as Oakwood who actually own whole buildings you will find it unusual to get less than a month.
There are some legal short term rentals but they are few.In NYC the best advice is to do your booking as early as possible with a booking that can be cancelled without penalty.
