Hi all

I flew VA from SYD-PER in December 2015 and the traditional animated inflight safety video (featuring Sir Richard!) was showing. My last A330 coast to coast flights in February and last weekend had the cabin crew perform the manual safety demonstration. It felt very rigid like the Jetstar safety demo and sounded like the pre recorded tape was Melissa Doyle yelling.

Does anyone know if the VA animation safety video will return in the same or different format?

I've had that happen before when the IFE wasn't capable (for reasons unknown to me) of playing the video at the time. It may also be the case if the content has changed but the video hadn't yet.

I think the animated version still had old electronic usage information/ rules ... would need to redo that part

Actually, that's funny – you're right. My first A330 C2C flight had the video, but none since have had it. I liked it – made me feel like I was flying internationally.

Complete speculation, but I think the last time I saw it was just before 'The Business' refit. Maybe the different entertainment systems between business/economy can no longer be operated easily from a central point, making playing one video across them all difficult?

I believe the manual safety demo is being done until a new video is completed featuring "The Business" once the 777 rollout takes place.

The entertainment system is exactly the same in both cabins on the A330. Simply a software upgrade with the new interface on the existing system.

Ahh, ok, cheers! I haven't actually flown in Y on an A330 since the refit :p. Made assumptions that the new entertainment interface was 'The Business' only!

Official word from Virgin Australia:

Due to the recent upgrade of our A330 business class, the safety demonstration is being done manually until an exciting new one will launch soon

I can't stand VA's safety video. It looks like you're being talked to by one of those Nintendo Wii characters and the voiceover tries too hard. Hoping they do a whole startover

Maybe VA and old mate, John Borgetti will take a page out of AirNZs book and do some way over the top video. Or perhaps follow Qantas with their new A380 safety video that doesn't feature any planes unless you count that wireframe of the outside of the A380 showing the exit slides.

It was appropriate back when it first launched, particularly since they were a start-up and were targeting the LCC-end of the market. Also being one of the first airlines to do the playful safety video thing. Now it's just a bit condescending. Something simple and classy would suit their new brand well.

Saw the new video in use this evening on VA468 BNE-PER (A330). Nothing to get excited about - live-action (not animated) and very green-screen / abstract - e.g. office chairs seem to be used instead of actual economy seats. Also all the passengers are crew in uniform (including children). An awful lot of walking on a treadmill towards the camera.

Yuk, doesn't sound inspired at all.....

Yep, the new video is quite dreadful really.

For those who haven't seen it:

Haha, I kept thinking throughout the video that she has been walking for an awful long time and still hasn't reached the end of the aircraft. Must be the A330 super long model. :)

I can forgive almost everything in the new video, but those "economy" seats are hideous. Particularly jarring when they've managed to use the business suite in the video.

What were they thinking? I get the Air France stylised cabin look if you can find some tasteful chairs but this is no good at all.

Oh. That's just plain bad.

The front girl of the 3 looks worried, the token male shot and the crossing of the legs for take off/ landing - especially when they're trained to have feet flat on floor.

Thankfully I never take the A330 so won't have to sit through it.

Clearly a cheap video to meet their needs without spending big dollars on something fancy.

Not a good sign but i'd rather they cut $ on these things then the actual service itself.

Haha I don't think it's that bad using crew - if it's a live demo the crew demonstrate everything rather than getting a passenger to put on a lifejacket or wear a mask etc.

Putting on my director's hat, she should've stopped walking at the end before she told us to enjoy our flight and her friends should've appeared from either side of shot. Also, surely the 332 fleet has enough downtime that *somebody* could do a closeup of a non-descript arm raising a window shade, lowering an arm rest and stowing a tray table (after wiping off the mess from the catering!)
