Went to a friend's place for dinner last night. I took the two German's and the 707. The single vineyard Grand Cru's from Frank Bonville. All vinified the same. Seen no oak, 100% Chardonnay, full malo and the same dosage. Really interesting comparison. The Pur Mesnil showed the best for me. The Pur Oger wasn't quite as expressive as the other two and I suspect suffered a minor fault. Only tiny quantities made with even fewer for the 2014 vintage (will only be 1000 bottles with 90 of those coming in to Australia). Both these were excellent but the Prum was the standout. Cork for the Prum was soaked through but the wine was still very fresh. A friend very generously supplied the '86 Grange. Drinking really well now. The 707 I was keen to try as I have a few more bottles. I wanted to know whether I should try flog the remaining bottles given the stratospheric prices you can now get for them. At the time I think I picked it up for $140. To be frank, it's impossible to compare to other Cabernets. The style is so uniquely Penfolds. You can't say its better value or not than other wines. It's different! This was lovely, but we should have decanted it for at least 30 minutes. Not sickly sweet or cloying at all.
