I was wondering if it was possible/legal for me to to NZ for an aircraft spotting trip for one day.

I live in MEL, so I would catch the 6AM flight to AKL, and then take the EK A380 back.

Is this allowed?

No reason why you can't, you might get asked a few questions as to why your trip was short...

Good luck and enjoy your day

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I agree with Fuzzy and you may end up spend some extra time with customs and immigration
is the trip at status run ?
As I can think of plenty of better way of increasing status points
or a cheap booze run ?

I've done it, had no problems......it's like flying interstate.

IIRC, someone on here did something very simlar last year. They said that they didn't have to clear customs/immigration in AKL because they were technically in transit. So in theory they never actually entered NZ.

And they didn't have any of the problems you may be worried about. Enjoy your trip :)

I doubt it.

I've done three trips to HKG in the last couple of months. First two I arrived at 6am and flew out again the same night. Last trip I arrived at 6pm and departed the next evening. Nobody batted an eyelid, either in HKG or Australia.

Just Checked EK F Melb to Auck on 22 May return 29 May for a cost of $2897 so not too bad. And just for a comparison same dates in Business on QF $2570.00 and on a 737 both ways. Wonder what is better value?

If you want to join the rest of the aircraft spotters at the eastern end of the runway then obviously you need to clear immigration/customs.
However there will be no problems. It's been done before

Given that the EK wont earn me QF SCs then it isn't much value ;)

Those are both monster prices though...

Seriously? Why don't you just fork out the $100 AUD to spend a Saturday night in Auckland... have a nice dinner and a few after dinner drinks at the Viaduct perhaps? Seems like a long way to go to not take advantage of the exchange rate and the chance to spend a night in a different city?

Monster Price???? What were you expecting?

Ek Business Class $1671 return or you can go for example MEL-SYD On Qantas 767 then on to Auckland on LAN A340 fully flat bed seat for $1800.00 and earn a lot more SC and be more comfy than a 737

I have a friend whose business involves regular trips to SIN and HKG. He flies in during the morning, sees clients at an airport meeting room during the day and flies out the same evening.

I do the day trip about 10 times a year, but that is for lunch. I have never even been asked about why my visit has been so short.

Get into AKL around 11:40am. QF25

Back at the airport around 5pm. QF134

O/T..... Once EK has the A380 Mel - AKL, I doubt I will be flying QF Trans Tasman again. Same price as QF J, I can get EK F with transfers etc. I'll easily attain P1 each year without my Trans Tasman flights.
