Have just come across this New York "Greeter Service" on the Internet.
new york greeter - Google Search

Sound like a great way for a first-timer like me to learn a bit about the New York layout, subway and attractions when I visit in mid-October.

Has anyone had experience with this service? Thanks.......

It has been going for quite some time and is an exceptional service. We had a BAG some 5-6 years ago and it was great. No cost and they give you a metrocard to go whereever they are showing you around. The time was meant to be around 3 hours but we basically were with our greeter all day.
Was to be a tour of Harlem which we saw just about everything of.then walked to the Upper West side and continued on.They are not supposed to accept any payment but we took a small gift-macadamias and a packet of Tim tams and payed for lunch.
Highly reccomended.Book early.Tick Greeters choice unless there is an area you really, really want to see as not everyone is allocated a BAG.If you ask for a specific area you are limiting the number of BAGs that might pick you.

We used the Big Apple Greeter Service on our first trip to NY in April 2001, the lady that collected us from our apartment was getting on in years but she was fabulous, we requested Harlem and she had initmate knowledge of the area, steered us away from the more commercial sites in Harlem and took us to a baptist church for a service and then onto a "soul food" restaurant away from the tourist traps. We were not allowed to pay her anything but of course did pay for her lunch and snacks throughout the day. In the later afternoon she took us to a Jazz concert in Duke Ellington's old apartment block and for a gold coin donation and I think the first 50 people in we sat in this lady's apartment and were entertained by some of NY's Jazz artists. the lady holds these gets togethers to raise money in memory of her son, not sure if they are still happening but it was the best afternoon and has left such great memories..so yes the service is great, we left late afternoon and she showed us the correct bus to atch while she went off and caught her bus home.

Another vote for the BAG service.

I used them in 2007 and had a great time. In total I spent about 5 hours with my greeter. We would have kept going but I was off to the theatre that night, so needed to leave.

I was travelling by myself and came away with some great memories of the time I spent with my greeter.

I am heading back there again later this year and have requested another greeter. :)

Oh i would love to add my 2cents worth also. There were 5 of us there in October 07 and the greeter we had was great. We started our day with a brekkie in a traditional NY diner then did Central Park, down to Little Italy for lunch, and many many sights to see. Greeter was so good and knew all the little quaint places around NY. would use them again. A few days later we went on another walking tour (I think it was called Scotts Walking tours of NY) approx $150 for 9 hours, worked out at $50 per person. This was a really good day, but you must be fit as you walk just about everywhere except on the Staten Island ferry. Very good value for money. Start with the free walk to get your bearings then consider doing the other you will enjoy in no end
