I've been hunting on both Qantas and this site but don't seem to be able to find and answer to my question.

I am am on the verge of tripping over the line to Silver / Ruby on the first leg on an upcoming trip to US. How long does it take till I can access any privledges in the new level or do I need to wait till I have a new card issued?

I think I read that AA give Ruby level one free checkin bag so it would be handy to be able to use the priority checkin and baggage benefit for a flight that is 3 days after I gain the last neededed 40 SC.

if if this is explained in another thread please just point me in that direction if it is easier.

Cheers

You don't need to wait for your new card, you will be able to access your benefits as soon as the flight is credited to your account and your status is upgraded. If a normal flight and nothing extra special about the way it was booked that may be as soon as the following day. Your card and silver bag tags and lounge pass normally take anywhere between 3 - 6 weeks.

Congrats on gaining that Silver ! Next stop Gold!

As others have said, should be fine within 3 days.

Your new status should show up automatically on your next boarding pass - this is what is most useful.

Check your status on the app or QF homepage. You might need to show the app to go into a priority check-in lane(?) but from there it should be fine.

It's one thing for the new status to be recognised by QF but can be more tricky on other OW carriers. There have been reports of AA not acknowledging the higher status as the previous QF NB status may still show in the AA system if that's what you were at the time of booking.

You could ask AA to delete the QF ffn and re-enter it to reflect the updated status in Sabre however OW Ruby no longer get free baggage allowance on AA - it's now only OW Sapphire and Emerald.

What sectors are you flying are what dates?

If the AA fights are on the same ticket as the QF trans Pacific flights then all AA flights should have a 2 piece allowance anyway so you'll get 2 pieces on each AA flight whether or not you are connecting to/from a QF trans Pacific flight.

It only becomes an issue for separate bookings made direct through AA on a separate ticket from your QF flights however if that connection is same day eg BNE/LAX QF then AA LAX/MIA then QF will through check your baggage to MIA and you'll be given the 3 piece allowance as a PS or OWR.

You'll still clear US Customs at LAX then do the bag drop straight afterwards.

Same deal if travelling eg MIA/xLAX/BNE on separate tickets as AA recognise the QF allowance so would allow you three pieces of checked luggage free of charge.

Once the status update has posted to your QFF account, it will be fine without the new card - for QF flights. For other OW members, it might require forcing an update of the status in their system (remove and reenter number normally does it). Otherwise, it can take up to a week for a status change to filter through.

I agree with others that three days should be enough time. But I had an experience a couple of years ago when upgrading from Silver to Gold that my account didn't "upgrade" for over a week. The qualifying flights were on a partner airline (AA) - don't know if that made any difference.

It was quite frustrating as I thought I would have access to the AA lounge in GRU, but was denied access because my boarding pass still showed my old status. I did wonder afterwards if I should have asked them to remove and then re-add my QFF number on the booking, then re-print my boarding pass in the hope it showed the correct status.

The flights are a Friday on QF BNE to LAX then same day connection to BOS on an AA flight. That first leg is enough to get the last few SC required.

On the Monday I have an AA from BOS to PHL and that does not seem to have been booked with my QF number on it as it is not showing up on my Qantas bookings. This is the flight that I was hoping to get the free checkin bag as I am picking up some things from family in Boston ( and yes I will pack that spare bag myself :) ). The AA site does indicate that first bag is free for Ruby but sites and staff do not always act in accord.

The next Sunday I fly back PHL/LAX/BNE.

Am I better off waiting till I check in for the AA to Philly before providing my QF number in the hope it comes up as the new status?

Thanks for the helpful input.

Understandably you won't get any benefits for the LAX-BOS flight on the Friday. Your new status should go through QF system over the weekend, so I would get your FF number attached to your AA flight when you arrive for check-in for your BOS-PHL flight. Check the QF app or website before leaving for the airport to make sure the status change has indeed happened over the weekend. Remember that the status change will occur in Australia time so even though you leave BNE on friday and arrive in Lax the same day (i.e. friday morning) it is actually Saturday where the status change will happen. Whether or not the change happens in a timely matter over the weekend not guaranteed. Hope this is clear.

If you are checking in the the QF15 at an airport kiosk just make sure the bag tag has BOS as your final destination and not just LAX. There have been some issues with airport kiosks short tagging bags to LAX when you are fully entitled to have your bag tagged to the final destination. Seek assistance from the ground staff who can retag your bag before you go to the bag drop.

It sounds like your flights are on the same ticket but if booked separately you will need to see a CSA to add the LAX/BOS oncarriage flight in for the the bags to be tagged to BOS. Ditto in PHL ie make sure they add in the QF16 oncarriage flight.

Just because you can't see the BOS/PHL in the QF MMB doesn't mean it's not in the same booking or they haven't added your frequent flyer number. Generally you would only see any other airlines' flight immediately after and before a QF flight ie LAX/BOS and PHL/LAX unless the airline is also an Amadeus user which AA is not.

Have you got a copy of your eticket? Double check if all the flights are on the same ticket and more importantly do they all reflect the 2 piece allowance in particular the BOS/PHL as that is the only flight you're on without an inbound or outbound trans Pacific flight.

The next Sunday I fly back PHL/LAX/BNE. Am I better off waiting till I check in for the AA to Philly before providing my QF number in the hope it comes up as the new status?

Even if you had no status at all, AA in PHL would honour the 2 piece @ 23kg QF allowance and check your bags PHL/LAX/BNE. If you had a 3rd bag which is a QF PS entitlement then I would ask AA in PHL to remove and re-enter your QF ff to reflect the updated OWR status.
