Yes at last plans for a new SPG property in Australia-
Starwood announces Sheraton Melbourne agreement - Luxury Travel Magazine

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced its agreement with the Golden Age Development Group to operate a Sheraton Hotel in Melbourne. The move will strengthen Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ presence in Australia, and the 170-room hotel is expected to open in 2013. The property will be part of Melbourne’s 27 Little Collins development project and will be located within the 31 storey “wavilinear” building, which will feature an indoor heated swimming pool, fitness centre and signature restaurant and bar

will wait till i see it.
we were meant to have an aloft sydney airport by now, think it went clarion instead

So it's now possible to mattress run in Melbourne without having to go out to Geelong. But I'd much rather have Starwood hotels in more domestic and NZ locales than another Starwood property in Melbourne or Sydney when the properties we have in either city are of decent standards... unless of course the W comes to Melbourne or return to Sydney in which case YES please!!

Good to see SPG growing rather than the decline its had in properties in the last 10 years, I hope the Melbourne proposal goes better than the BNE Westin.

Hobart, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin could all do with a SPG presence again, as could Canberra that almost had a Sheraton before it went to Hyatt.

When I renewed my Starwood Privilege in December they extended my expiry date from December 2012 to February 2013, so I could try the new Sheraton Melbourne. Given the new opening date of November 2013, maybe they will offer a further extension on Privilege till November 2013! :D

In the other hand W Hotel Melbourne anyone? Only a proposal though!

What's the info on that pic? I would have thought W would never return to Australia. That said, Woolloomooloo was never the right location, not was it of the brand standard.

I have to say, those pix on the Sheraton Melbourne's website look underwhelming. Other than the SOTP artwork, it actually looks like it's a 4 Points.

Is it possible you can advise (or somebody) the cost of the Starwood Privilege program, I would like to compare with priority privliege program that I currently have.

I might change later in the year when my PP comes up for renewal.

Thanks

R

The program has changed slightly so that now each country issues its own package.
For Australia the package is now called Star Privilege Pacific, and covers Australia, New Caledonia, and Fiji.
Cost per annum is $309.
You get the usual membership card which gives you 50% off the price of two dining.
Also 10% discount off most accommodation rates, but not all.

Get 2 free bottle of wine certificates.
4 discount vouchers for selected hotels.
4 50% off dining vouchers for group up to 8.
1 50% off dining voucher for group up to 4.
1 complimentary breakfast, lunch, or dinner voucher for 2. Either buffet, or two course menu if buffet not offered.
4 Late Check Out or Upgrade Offers.
5 One Time Use guest Certificates.

If you use Starwood Hotels should be fairly easy to pay for the package by the savings on 4 or 5 meals.

Rather than start a new thread I will post here.

I have two spare One Time Use Guest Certificates for Starwood Hotels in Australia, New Caledonia, or Fiji.
They expire end of February 2013.
Each can be used for dining ie 50% discount for two people dining. Once only.
Or each can be used for accommodation giving 10% off most available rates for up to 5 days.

Happy to give these to a member/members here, as long as you have an Australian postal address.

If anyone is interested please let me know and I will select the recipient/s.

If the cert's are up for grabs can I please be considered as I can use them for dinner at the Sheraton GC.

You can PM me if you like, thanks R

Construction on the new Sheraton Melbourne is going on very nicely; should be opened by Late February, a year later then intended - its more than half way done. The new Sheraton Melbourne would have a more boutique feel rather than your typical city Sheraton. Sadly W Hotels Melbourne never materialised and Le Meridien has been gone for a few years now too, leaving very little options in Melbourne - at least the Westin is still here which in my opinion is very top notch and the beds are their best asset!

I notice now the opening date is March 31 2014.
I will be up around that way (Sofitel) next month and will go check the progress out - good coffee at the cafe next door too.
Seems ages ago now when I was on the roof top of the City Budget Hotel opposite and watched the crane get assembled in a day in the hole in the ground.
