Air New Zealand's new cabin crew outfits like 'drag queens'.

Thunderbirds are out and "drag queen" Barbie is in.
Air New Zealand revealed last night its new "concept" uniform design – complete with a candyfloss pink colour scheme – created by Kiwi fashion designer Trelise Cooper.
The uniform will be introduced in 2011 to coincide with the introduction of a new fleet of 777-300 aircraft. Cooper was chosen over 25 other New Zealand designers to come up with the new designs.
Airline spokesman Ed Sims said the uniform, to be worn by more than 5000 staff, was "contemporary", based on New Zealand themes that still allowed individual choice by addressing body type and personality preference.
"We have also been working closely with Trelise to ensure the uniform colour palette works in harmony with our soon to be unveiled new aircraft interiors," he said.
A flight attendant who spoke to New Zealand's The Dominion Post but who did not want to be named, said the uniform resembled the look sported on the airline's annual themed flight to Sydney's Mardi Gras festival. "The flight attendants look like drag queens off the Air New Zealand 'pink' flight."
Though Air New Zealand said the uniforms would suit a "variety of body shapes and work requirements", the attendant said the colour would show up spilt food and drinks. Patterns were not usually recommended for larger body sizes, and a shorter length would also have helped create a more slender look.
The male flight attendants' uniform and ground staff uniform was "very professional", but she said the female cabin crew uniform was let down by its colour. "I haven't worn that colour since I was five."
Jack Yan, publisher of fashion magazine Lucire, said the patterns fitted with the heritage of Air New Zealand, but questioned the colour choice. "I know airlines find differentiation very important today, but I've some doubts on whether pink conveys any national values."
The present uniform, designed by Kiwi label Zambesi and launched in October 2005, drew controversy and was described as having a "Thunderbirds" look.
Air New Zealand said the final design for the new uniform would be completed over the coming months.

These uniforms are absolutly disgusting!

I'm really not sure what they were getting at with these uniforms.

That said, the new ground staff uniforms are very smart. They look great (and not pink).

Not sold on the pink, but it looks like the ground staff have the same pattern, just with green, so perhaps doing it in blue or any colour but pink, might work out for them.

Love this comment on FT:

"I'm thinking a about the poor people in 1AB on a Q300 going into WLG on a bad day. Are they going to get free sick bags & painkillers?"

Sorry, but I don't think even those going to the mardi gras in SYD on NZ would be seen dead in that pink number.

The new male uniform looks just as terrible, I didn't think it was possible to make male FA's look any more sexually questionable then they do now, but NZ seems to have done that quite nicely.

Quite true, but I didn’t realise NZ charged for sick bags? As far as pain killers go, I was given free panadol on JQ of all airlines, so :p

Also I realise it’s not your comment, but a quote ;)

The pink is ghastly ! (And that's the nicest comment I could manage). The pattern is nice though and looks good on the ground staff model, although I do wonder whether it would look ghastly as well once the jacket was off.

The male manager's uniform looks ok to me - although the model really isn't wearing it well.

At least they're consulting with their staff (who will tell them that pink is a fashion no-go zone), and the staff should get something appropriate eventually.

The quote
Patterns were not usually recommended for larger body sizes
is definitely true. It does create some inappropriate jokes within Qantas cabin crew to do with their uniform.

What's all the kerfuffle about the 'fairy floss' pink dress colour? I find it personally acceptable and the referral to being like a drag queen outfit is silly .... damn homophobics really.

Besides, the whole wide world is into 'pink this, pink that' concept and it's all for a good cause - breast cancer awareness. So imagine if Air NZ came out and said "we're going pink in support of breast cancer" Would we get the same kerfuffle response that is eventuating now????? I bet not!

It might not, but they haven’t said that! :p
