Looking at booking a family holiday to fiji will be 10yr wedding anniversary.

want to fly out Sydney to nadi 22/7/13 returning 30/7/13 in Y

currently platinum with qantas and a points balance of 240,000 all from flying too..no other family members are members...

can route via BNE or AKL, can do any combination of points plus pay, noticed qf have a special on at the moment, any suggestions, been trying for a few hours and just have too many options. Will book accommodation separately to get best deals

ideally would get great if I could travel on an any seat award to get credits and family on a classic, can this be done and still gain them access into the first lounge Sydney. As travelling with me?.. Appreciate any ideas?

I've only searched for your departure at this stage (not yet your return). A few comments and suggestions:

  • There are no Y awards A/V on FJ910 (SYD-NAN) on 22/7. Though, even if there were, you would not be able to access the SYD F lounge as this is not the QF codeshare (which can't be booked with points), but the Air Pacific code instead. While you would still earn SCs if this were booked as an ASA, you would not have lounge access.
  • You can access the SYD F lounge on this trip by routing SYD-AKL-NAN, though this would make the cost 50,000/person (one way), as opposed to 36,000 routing SYD-BNE-NAN (with SYD-BNE as a normal domestic flight). Be aware that you would then not be able to access the QF lounge in AKL as your next flight would be on the Air Pacific code
  • You can only take one guest with you into the F lounge as a Platinum FF.
  • You didn't mention how many people you were looking to travel with.
  • You can book multiple passengers on the same booking, though each booking must be of the same type (and fare class)

My suggestion here would be to make one booking for yourself as an Any Seat Award (ASA) as follows:

22/7 QF141 SYD-AKL 06:30-11:40
22/7 FJ410 AKL-NAN 12:55-16:00

This can be found by searching for SYD-NAN on the date you supplied.

If you wish to take 1 guest into the F lounge, you would then make a new booking the same above, but as a Classic Award (cheaper $$$-wise) for your family members. You would need to decide if you would like to travel with your entire family (while only being able to take one member in as a guest), or if you are happy to take different flights. If the latter is the case, make the above Classic Award booking for ONE family member only. My suggestion would then be to make another Classic Award booking for the remaining family members, routing as follows:

22/7 QF556 SYD-BNE 21:05-22:05 (or QF548 SYD-BNE 19:05-20:35 to have a more comfortable connection)
23/7 FJ922 BNE-NAN 00:10-05:30

This would be cheaper than taking everyone through AKL for no reason (36,000/person vs. 50k via AKL), and would also avoid the cost of paying for a hotel room on the evening of 22/7 for these family members, as they would be arriving early the next morning. Depending on where you stay, you may wish to enquire about early check-in ahead of time, or to be safer, make a 'day use' room booking for these family members, which would typically guarantee a room to be available from ~9am-6pm, and then booking the same room type from 23/7 onwards. While slightly more complicated, it does save the cost of an extra night, day use rates are usually quite low compared to an overnight stay, and it would help to ensure that your family members weren't kept waiting for a room until the published check-in time (sometimes 2-3pm - a long time to wait after a red eye flight). Depending on their ages and energy levels, they could always leave all of their bags in your room until their room becomes available (if you decided not to book a day use room), though they may like to get some rest.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts, and if you like my suggestions, I'd be happy to search for your return flights (I'd need to know how many were travelling though)! :)

I looked at redemptions to NAN ex-Aus on QFF and they seemed rather expensive on a pts/$ proposition. I found MEL/SYD-HKG, SIN, LAX etc to be better value relatively speaking.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
