Can anyone tell me what the most popular FFPs are for australian residents? ie, a top ten or so of the programs with the highest member bases (australian residents). I would think it would tend to be the qantas alliance programs...but maybe I'm wrong.

Any help would be great!

I don't know that anyone can tell you for certain. But plenty of people will be willing to nominate what they think will be in the top-10.

My guess would have QFF at number 1, and DJ Velocity at number 2 (some may disagree). Others that I think would make the top-10 will include (not necessarily in this order) UA, NZ, SQ, EK.

You need to supply a bit more info (from your second string you mentioned that you have just joined a new company and will be flying a lot and want to know which programs to join)
  • Will you mainly only being flying domestic?
  • If you are likely to fly international to which parts of the world (countries)?
  • Does you new company have any polocies on flights (ie if cheapest avaiable you may need to join Virgin)
  • Do you have much credit card use?
  • will you be able to earn points on your new company credit card/
  • can you boost with hotel stays and car hire?

From the points that you will gather...what is your goal to burn?

Flights for you. If so economy or business.

Flights for a family (ie multiple redemptions at once)

Upgrades to busniss for you.

Cash rewards....

Rewards for goods..

So what is important to you..and what opportunities will you have???

The trick with FF programs is to do what best advantages you and your situation...and to not necessarily just do what the majority has.

Just for clarity to follow the discussion - this was the original thread info:

Howdy all

have just landed a job that will see me travelling for most of the year all over the place...I'm a member of Qantas FF...but what would be the top ten of 'the rest' of FFPs that I should also look at?

The key thing is who is deciding how you fly.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm an avid reader of the comments posted by the experienced FF's.
I,too, have wondered about the most valuable FF program.
I fly for pleasure, mostly, international, and abhor cattle class.
I would tend to put QFF at the bottom of my list as they cannot guarantee an upgrade using FF points. However I'm not sure whether any of the other FF programs are more reliable in this regard.
To date I have been able to fly to USA with United upgrading to Business with Milage Plus points; have not tried any other program.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

gphamor,

Welcome to AFF.

The answer to this is highly subjective.

IF you only travel international the *A programs can work OK. That's what I used until the Kiwi's killed off Ansett. If, however you fly domestic within Oz your are 'stuck' with Qantas and the OW programs or Virgins own program which has very limited connectivity to anyone else.

So yes, QF is difficult to get upgrades (easier with status) or UA is difficult to earn miles do lack of a domestic partner.

Thanks Bill,

I am happy to fly economy using either Qantas or Virgin within OZ. and pay for the privelege.
However, flying o/s I would like to use points accumulated on my credit cards to upgrade an economy flight to business which is difficult with Qantas as I do not fly enough to upgrade my status from Bronze.

Cheers,
George

.... and UA are difficult to earn points due a lack of associated CC's in Oz.
