had a very interesting discussion yesterday.

Should there be more routes across the Tasman ?

In Kiwi/Freedom days we had far more routes like out of PMR, DUD, HLZ + ROT has been tried & places like NPE with a population more than DUD have never had nonstop services to OZ.

Surely, a few nonstop services a week in peak periods could work ?

Yes but at the same time all the airlines need to focus on actually maintaining services between the big cities first. Qantas is required by law to use A330's across the ditch (to keep up capacity), Air NZ and VA seem to still be in a fight and Air NZ has even been struggling to fill flights post the split.

Air NZ promised to almost double frequencies to some places like ZQN, WLG and CHC however have back-pedalled on that due to poor sales. If they can't sell to the big ones then what hope have they got to smaller ones.

The only thing I can think of would be Alliance or QF link using F70/F100/B717's across the ditch (range permitting).
