I have been out of Australia, very few people would have noticed as I brought myself a Vodafone sim card while I was in New Zealand so kept up with the reading on AFF. Burnt through over 100mb of data in less than a week. I guess I am more addicted to the Internet than I would like to admit. Now back to work, not liking, while I am away from work I am not spending any money so the company bank account is healthy, can't say the same for my personal credit card.

100Mb of data in a week is not much these days.

Indeed. 50MB goes very quick in a session. I currently use about 8GB a month, and that's without torrents but including some video streaming.

I went through 100mb a day for a few days whilst over in NZ.

It's quite easy to burn through that kind of data quickly depending on how the data is charged. For example, I have an Optus Prepaid Wireless Broadband that charges in 10MB blocks. In addition, the first use of data that day will always charge a minimum amount of MB (can't remember what it is - I think it's either 10MB (no big deal) or 30MB (ouch)). Easy to see how 10MB can just disappear if you have push services enabled, or even if just checking Twitter.

Next, 1 MB is not really 1 megabyte (same problem as selling HDDs, CDs, DVDs, and even floppy disks back in the days), but computers always work in real megabytes (aka mebibytes).

Most - if not all - data plans count both uploads and downloads. Again, push services can ravage data allowances due to the need for open, continuous, bidirectional traffice. Tweeting with Twitpic is of course asking for trouble (especially if you timeout and have to start the upload all over again).

So quite easy to burn that kind of data in a short amount of time. Don't know what the standard basic data allowance is on typical postpaid/prepaid plans are these days (I'm imagining starts at 1GB).

Re: The totally off-topic thread

100mb could go very quick if you are getting software updates and security updates as well.

I use app 100mb per day when out of the office on my broadband stick.

I pay $39 per month and get 3GB or i was paying $29 and getting 1GB but can easily use that in a few night on AFF when I am away.

Telstra pre paid starts at about 200mb with a 21 day expiry.

Upto 10GB with a 365 day expiry.

TMK all mobile data plans include both upload and download data are all counted toward the overall figure.

Just ask Mrs Simo who used a prepaid broadband stick and e mailed heaps of photos to all our friends individually so we used over 3GB in one day and it was all upload I did get a call and say there was a problem that it had stopped working.

Bigpond plans upload and download are all counted towards the overall figure.

Telstra Business Broadband does not include uploads... Simo happy about this as we now have that at home instead of prepaid broadband. Saving over $100 month.

Is that a recent change? They've charged in the past for uploads.

Recent at least 12 months,

The policy use to be you where able to upload app 4 to 5 times your current download limit

If you have been charged for uploads ring customer service and ask them.

I have a user who uploads hundreds of files everyday to a storage cloud and they have never complained about excess broadband charge.

That's handy to know for if I ever do move back to Aus!

Just remember that is business broadband so you don't get shaped when you hit your data allowance.

So you can get a very big bill if you don't have the right plan or have a massive usage plan.

For app $400 per month(from memory) you can get unlimited usage.

I don't use much data so I only pay $40 per month for 10GB.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Too much on topic (broadband).

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I'll change to off topic then.

The weather here is much better than in New Zealand.

But we aren't in the off topic thread any more.

Weather is warmer than in New Zealand but cool by Brisbane standards.

I normally go through that when I wake up in the morning just by downloading e-mails from a certain moderator on this forum :D :D

I have a Telstra 12G prepaid microsim for the iPad (lasts for 12 months)...

... did not use the 12G of data in 12 months, however there was some WiFi use, in that mix.

I have a 2GB plan on my phone which is almost always nearly gone at the end of the month (Virgin's excess usage charges make sure of that)...

For out and about I have a 1GB USB modem (also Virgin) for $10 to use with my MacBook Air... That one usually comes close but on the rare occasion I do go over I can buy an extra GB for $15 of I need it...

And finally on the home broadband front we have another USB stick (Virgin again) that has 10GB for $39 which NEVER lasts a full month. Again I can buy more of I really need it...

Home broadband (through a WiFI router) and my mobile are pretty much on 24/7 (barring flying time) so I don't think I do too bad
