I will be transiting through Melbourne and will have 6-7 hours to keep myself occupied, and need suggestions for what to do. The only requirements are:

1. try to keep cost to a minimum, say less than $100 all up.
2. arriving melbourne airport 2pm, need to be back at the airport around 9pm
3. travelling alone on holiday

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

I take it from your location that you are in Canberra?
Get the Skybus into Southern Cross Station ($26 return).
By this time it will be 3pm.
Walk along Collins St for some fabulous window shopping.
By a 2-hour metcard for the tram ($3.70).
Go to the Melbourne Museum ($8 but if you go after 3.30pm, you may get in for free - ask! - or least at a reduced rate).
After the musem, stop at one of the brilliant laneway bars for a drink. Grab some dinner in Chinatown. There are some seriously great places to eat for a pitance.
By this time, it's probably 7.30pm at least and you may be ready to head back to the airport on the skybus, which leaves every 10 minutes.
So little time, such a great city.

Second Justinf's suggestions, that's a pretty good set of ideas for a 6hr layover in MEL.

wow yeah, that's a great (and relatively cheap) way to use up ur time ~ and get a nice day out up the paris end of marvelous melb!

I would have recommended a MCG tour but I think you will miss the last departure at 3PM, maybe have a look at visiting the Eureka Observation Deck, or grabbing a tram to St Kilda for a beer at the Espy or other local attractions that you wont find in another city.

I'm doing almost this exact same thing early next year before an international flight so I'm interested in everyones ideas

Trip to the Paris end of Collins St? Beer in St Kilda? Please...

Such fun and culture can be experienced in the Tiger terminal just a short 2 min walk from the main terminal (turn right once outside on the ground floor and follow the yellow tiger paws).

Get yourself some popcorn ($5) and a latte ($3) from the coffee kiosk out front of the Tiger terminal and then find a nice front row seat (free!) next to the Tiger check in queue.

Watch in awe as people miss their flights by 14 seconds then get charged $300 to book a new one, be mesmerized when passengers weigh-in 23kgs over their 7kg luggage allowance and then try to 'balance' their bags right in front of you on the terminal floor (watch out for the dirty underwear!), be shocked by the brutal verbal lashings handed out by Tiger staff as they demand credit cards for additional fees from little old ladies who did not realise they could check in online for free using a thing called the internet.

All this & more is yours at Melbourne's fastest growing tourist attraction - T4 Melbourne Airport.

:D

If you are walking along Collins Street from Southern Cross, it is rather a long walk, so you could maybe catch a tram part of the way.
A few thoughts of some things to see.

Check out the Gothic banking chamber of the ANZ Bank at 388 Collins Street,
and the old CBA Bank at 335 Collins Street.

Check out the Block Arcade at 282 Collins Street, and grab a coffee.

Head up to the Sofitel at 15 Collins Street, and head for the 35th floor.
Inspect the toilets, great view of the city and MCG, plus its free.

Head along Spring Street, see the Windsor Hotel, and check some of the public areas, see Parliament House across the road, then stop for a drink at the City Wine Bar, then check out the Princess Theatre. Wander down Little Bourke Street, and experience Chinatown.

Best thing I've read all day.

Having been to T4 twice (arriving once, departing the other), I never want to step into that god forsaken hell hole ever again. Wild horses couldn't drive me away from QF and the QP these days.

Everyone on AFF should experience a bad day at T4 just once....they will never complain again about DJ or QF...ever!
