Hi,

I'm trying to fly from Melbourne to Seattle (one-way) after recovering from surgery. Hence would like to fly business class. I have 50k Krisflyer and 80k Qantas. Is there any method for me to fly business class via using my points for upgrades?

Thanks.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

What status do you have with QF or SQ? Most flights from the states to AUS are busy and always have high status passengers on them that get the upgrades first. You could try buying a Y/Y+ ticket and trying for a points upgrade but you will most likely need to be a gold QFF at minimum.

You need 96k Qantas points to book a one way in Business MEL-LAX. Maybe you could sign up for a credit card bonus to get the remaining points you need?

When are looking to fly as that might be your next problem, availability.

Otherwise on the upgrade front it is a gamble. You need to book a non sale fare on Qantas (which is likely to be very expensive one way) and then put in for an upgrade request using your points. It is then a lottery but determined based on status. So if you have no status you are likely at the end of a very long queue. You could get lucky, but you have to be happy to travel in the cabin you paid for.
