I had an interesting flight yesterday, so thought I'll write up a trip report on it.

On Thursday, 25th March, I was informed by work that I needed to be in Bahrain by Sunday, 28th March and couldn't leave till EOB, Friday. Looking online, I managed to find a flight on Etihad via Sydney and Abu Dhabi for just over $2000. This was on the Qantas website using the Qantas code-share... so that I could get the SCs. The other option via HKG came in at $7700 for a full economy fare.

I walked up to MEL domestic at 12:00 for the 13:00 flight to Sydney and got my pre-selected seat. Went to the Business lounge for a few drinks before heading to the gate. At the gate, my pass wouldn't work and on checking with the counter, I was informed that I had been upgraded to Business. My first ever Operational Upgrade. :) :) Even though it was just a short 1 hour flight, it felt good. The luggage was checked all the way to BAH, but I had to check-in to Etihad in Sydney.

By the time I got to Sydney International terminal, I was told I was the last person to check-in. The flight was oversold and I was offered US$300 and a business class seat on the next flight (5 hours later). I would still have go into BAH at 9 AM, so accepted the offer. What is another 5 hours in the QF First Lounge. :) I'd gladly take that wait for 14 hours in Business.

My tickets were re-booked and boarding passes printed. The only thing left was for the US$300. While waiting, I found out that the next flight was oversold by 30 seats and Etihad had oversold all flights all weekend. There were people on standby who were being turned away and told not much chance till Monday. Just as I was about to pick up my new boarding passes, the counter got a call from the gate that one passenger from AKL, although checked-in had not shown up. They withdrew my offer and put me back on the same plane. I was escorted through customs and security and to the gate and boarded last. This also meant my pre-selected seat was no longer available and I was put at the back of the plane in the middle. :( :(

The manager on duty apologised and said that they will make it up to me and took down my return flight details. Will they do anything and do I have a chance at an upgrade on the return flight???? I'll find out in 2 weeks.

The seats on Etihad are very very small. They have this footrest that folds up and takes up so much space. For a 6' 3" person, I felt very uncomfortable. The AIS basketball team was on the same flight and those guys had all the exit row seats. Considering that they are all 7' plus, I was happy for them. Surprisingly, the flight was smooth. I saw 2012 on the TV, ate lunch (my special meal was available), fell asleep, woke up at breakfast time, saw another movie and arrived into Abu Dhabi. They meant that I must have slept atleast 9 hours on a stretch.

In Abu Dhabi, I tried getting into the lounges. I could not go to the Etihad lounge as only Etihad business and gold members are allowed. QF platinum are not. I tried the Gazal lounge and QF platinum are only allowed if flying on BA. So, I was stuck waiting outside for 4 hours while waiting for the next flight. The flight to BAH was on time and smooth as well.

Based on my two flights on Etihad, they are an efficient and smooth airline in the air. Don't know if they always oversell as much or this weekend was a special case. In any case, the clincher for me was the lack of lounge access for WP. The whole trip was 22 hours elapsed time, the same as if I went with CX via HKG. But with CX, I would have access to the Wing in HKG. With no lounge access in AUH, I doubt I will fly with them again.

Now to wait and see what happens on the return flights.....

Ouch, I almost shed a tear for you.

Good luck on the return flight!

What a bugger about no lounge access in AUH ... Great TR, can't wait to get the return story - hope you get an upgrade !

The answer is Priority Pass, I think...

That, sir, was a crushing blow. Thanks for the TR and let us know how the return flight goes.

I also think that work telling you to not leave before EOB Friday and expecting you to be in BAH for two weeks by Sunday morning is rubbish.

I start my return journey in about 10 hours time and see nothing in my booking that suggests I will get anything extra from Etihad... heres still hoping though.

Writing this from Sydney airport as I wait for my flight to Melbourne.

I arrived at Bahrain airport and checked in till Sydney. The boarding passes were for economy, so I thought that was the end of that. At the gate, they had a manual system where the agent put into they system the seat number of the passenger. On putting my boarding pass in, he crossed out the seat number (17A) and changed it to 12A. He didn't say anything else to me. While I was walking down the airway to the gate, the agent who checked me in came running and gave me a new boarding pass and told me that they will not be able to provide me with my requested meal for this leg. I asked him whether there were any changes to my AUH - SYD leg and he said no. On entering the plane, my suspicions were confirmed... 12A was the last business class row. I had been upgraded. The flight itself was pretty empty. I guess there were only about 60 people in Economy based on the people in the waiting room. I was the only one in that business class cabin and there were 2 other people in the sections further ahead. So, this was definately not an op-up.

The seats were nice and comfy and the food was really good, considering that it was just an hour flight to AUH. Just enough time to take-off, have breakfast and then land. I think the plane was an A-340, the same as used for the AUH-SYD sector as it had a first class cabin, two business class cabins and then economy at the back.

In AUH, I went to the Etihad Lounge to see if my next leg was also in J or still in Y. Unfortunately, they said it was still Y. Also, I could not access the lounge based on having arrived into AUH in J. So, another 4 hours to waste in AUH. I ended up buying an Nokia 5230 and playing the games that came with it.

At the gate, again the agent crossed out my seat number (26A) and put down 5C and said that I had been upgraded to Business. Yay :) :) :)

5C was the first row of business class and on the aisle side on the left. It felt smaller than the 12A seat I had on the previous flight. In any case, it had lie flat beds and I could actually fit in it without having to contort my 6"2' body. Again, my AVML meal was not available, but they had enough of a choice in their normal menu that I could have a hearty lunch, snack and breakfast during the flight. For the amenities kit, they give out a satchel the size of netbook. The items in the kit are ok, but the satchel itself is nice and something I can give my son.

Boarding call made... will edit the rest later.

Edit: Finish Trip Report
The flight departed from AUH about an hour late. We all boarded on time. Initially, the captain said that they expected to get to Sydney quicker today and were waiting till they pass the 6 AM curfew time so as not to end up circling Sydney. Then, he came on air again to say that none of the toilets were working and engineers were looking at it. We got away about an hour after schedule and arrived in SYD 30 mins late. That 30 mins was enough to miss my connection to MEL. Got changed to the next flight out of SYD and there was nothing unusual or special about that flight... a typical Qantas cityflyer experience.

Overall, big kudos to Etihad for keeping the word of a ground staff member in Melbourne. I believe they had no reason to upgrade me to J on the return trip. Although disappointed at the J offer being withdrawn at the start, I know these things happen. By upgrading the return trip, Etihad has won me over. Now, they just need to figure out a lounge situation with Qantas in AUH and I will fly EY over CX in that part of the world. In any case, I'm going to write to them to let them know about the good experience wih them. Airlines deserve to know when they have done things well in addition to all the complaints we normally make.

Cheers,
MrHyde

Firstly congrats on the upgrade on the long sector. I'm sure that it would have been an awesome experience. Any pics?

I was the only one in that business class cabin and there were 2 other people in the sections further ahead. So, this was definately not an op-up.

Secondly, I might be a bit obtuse here but why in your opinion wasn't this an op-up?

Sorry, no pics as my phone ran out of battery and I didn't take a camera with me.

As for why I said this wasn't an op-up... I consider an op-up to be an upgrade for operational reasons - economy is overbooked, aircraft change leading to less seats in economy, etc. The upgrade on the return trip was not for any of those reasons, but a good faith response by Etihad for withdrawing the op-up offer from the first leg.

OK now I understand where you are coming from.

I have always considered any upgrade that wasn't pay for via points or cash an op-up.

That's fantastic that they followed through on their word.

I had a flight a few years ago from YOW to MEL where not one promise was kept. We missed our original flight due to a mess up with the UA computers, and when told we would be upgraded, managed to be placed in even worse seats than our originals AND seperated! Not a good move...
