For the brave and hardy souls among the AFF crowd, I was looking through the list of business class fares to Europe on Directflights and saw Garuda was doing MEL-AMS, SYD-AMS and PER-AMS fares in J for very reasonable prices. Maximum stay away appears to be a month.

1. Go to directflight.com.au (or Wotflight.com: Cheap Flights & online airfares. Wotif.com's flight site - just plane easy or travel.com.au - Cheap Flights, Hotels, Holiday Packages, Cruises, Tours - one destination. endless possibilities. - the fares show up there too)
2. Select departure city of MEL/SYD/PER
3. Select destination of AMS
4. Select Business class
5. Select dates (it worked on 28/4/12, return 17/5/12)
6. Select airline as Garuda
7. Select My dates are flexible

This should get you a J (well D) fare ex-MEL for $3307 all-in. Play around with dates to get shorter connections. Whether you fly Garuda, well that's up to you.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have flown both Garuda Business Class and Emirates Business Class.

Garuda is a much more comfortable seat - lie flat on the A330 - 200 , the IFE is good but not the 600 channels of EK - but enough to watch and listen to.

The inflight service is better than EK and the food choices on a par.

I have been flying GA both internationally and domestically within Indonesia since 2000 and feel safer on GA that QF - but everyone has to make their own decision about that
