Hi All, Flying MEL - LAX late Oct (Sun 25th) and now have choice of QF93 (A380) or QF95 (B747). Have gone QF93 in past but just wondering about QF95. Particularly any comments on quality of aircraft and chance of upgrade using points from Y to J or even PE. Thanks, Mike

Thought: flying to LAx on a Sunday MAY be more prime to some business pax as they get in Sun afternoon and can refresh before a week of meetings or whatever, but if they want to maximise their weekend time with family(or whatever) then the later flight would probably be the one they'd go for which means J may be more full on that particular day. Further, the 380 sees chances of some J pax getting upgraded to F, with a resultant shuffle again opening up options.

The con to that is that the 380's have had poor reliability dispatch wise over recent months with the fleet absolutely stretched to the limit so if time is at all critical here, then the 744 may be the way to go. Of course if one books the 380 and it's delayed or cancelled there's further rebooking opportunities later in the day onto the 744 or via SYD.

conclusion? if it were me I'd probably go for the 380 but it's a very individual and unique situation very time and date variable.

I flew to LAX from SYD last month and found that flights via MEL (on QF93) were $100s cheaper. I love the 747 but I find that on a flight longer than 10hrs, I get all snotty and eventually get a few blood noses (happened after QF63, 64 and 18). I don't get this in A380s in similarly long flights (which I'm assuming is due to the added humidity).
FYI here's a video trip report I made of my flight on QF93 last month:

Thanks for all the responses. I've flown both aircraft types numerous times and to me the best thing about the A380 is the quietness, especially upper deck. Always fly Y but sometimes get points upgrade to J which obviously makes the trip soooooo much nicer. Might come down to J upgrade seat availability - what's the best way to check?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
