Mel - JFK J class Question

Hi all,
A quick one for those in the know.
I was hoping to book Mel - JFK return in J, however on the journey to the states i would love to stop off in LA for a few days to catch up with friends and continue then on to JFK. The return journey would be direct from JFK - MEL. Can this be done on a normal return ticket (good sale on at the moment) or do i have to do a multi city ticket.
Any suggestions / help would be great.

It needs to be done as a multi city booking due to the stopover but it will still be the same price give or take a few dollars in tax.

The Business Sale fare conditions allow 1 free stopover, so that should be possible although you would have to book it over the phone (and pay the assisted booking fee).

Hi euro, my wife and I booked a pretty similar thing when J fares were on sale last year and the only way we could do it was multi city. We have three days in Los Angeles before going onto JFK and then flying home from Lax.

Booking it as a multi city didn't effect the price at all. We loved the idea of a few days in LA before going onto New York.

The current advertised fare ex MEL ($6,699 return) can be booked online as a multi city, subject to availability on the desired travel dates - I just had a look for availability in October and had no trouble getting MEL - LAX - JFK - MEL including a 3 day stopover in LAX for $6,699.

That's good if that's the case as I'm sure it didn't always work out like that. Perhaps it's an enchancement that really is!

I guess the thing to do first is check the round trip fare Aust/JFK/Aust with no stopover & ascertain the fare, then when you explore the stopover options you would know if it's charging you that same price or overcharging you for using the multi city tool.

If doing it yourself online using the multicity tool does charge you more I would always call up and ask for the assistance fee to be waived as you cannot do it yourself.

Agree. I booked MEL-(DXB)-LHR return earlier this year and wanted to stop by for a week in DXB on the way up. Called up and asked QF and lady I spoke to said to book online (to avoid the phone assist fee) via the multicity option and advised that it may cost more. Booked it online and was pleased to see that it didn't cost a cent more.
