While the majority of domestic flights operated on major routes (two or more operators) continue to arrive less than 15 minutes late - the generous punctuality measure, especially for shorter routes - the trend continues to be for more to arrive late, despite padded schedules, with cancellations continuing to rise.

For 'mainline', VA overall was more punctual than QF in arrivals but as always this varied by route.

BITRE figures show that for March 2019, cancellations on the MEL to SYD (northbound) route reached seven per cent (77 flights flicked) for QF, 5.8 per cent (46) for VA, 6.5 per cent for TT (17) and 3.5 per cent for JQ (14 did not operate northbound).

Northbound on this busy route, VA was best for timekeeping, but still 24.3 per cent of its MEL - SYD northbounds were 15 minutes 00 seconds or more late arriving at the designated gate.

QF had 28.1 per cent officially late, while for JQ the percentage of tardy flights at least 15" late was a shocking 31.5 per cent and for TT an even worse 38.5 per cent.

Compare this to a typical high speed rail route of similar distance overseas where punctuality can be between 95 and 99.99 per cent at destination, and there's no false padding of schedules. Cancellations are nowhere near seven per cent of scheduled trains.

SYD to BNE (northbound) was a bit better but QF still had 25.4 per cent of its flights arriving in BNE at least 15 minutes 00 seconds late at the gate. It cancelled 3.7 per cent of scheduled northbounds but JQ "bested" it (haha) with 8.3 per cent of its SYD to BNE offerings getting the flick.

Southbound from SYD to MEL, VA had a smaller percentage of cancelled flights (5.5 per cent compared to QF's 7.1) while "only" 24.2 per cent of VA flights arrived 15 mins + late in MEL compared to 29.1 per cent of QF's. TT was worst with a terrible 41.4 per cent of its southbounds 15 min or more late at gate in MEL while JQ had 29.7 per cent officially late arriving at its T4 in the southern capital.

One major political party suggests it'll fund and build high speed rail from MEL to NTL via CBR and SYD. The other has sadly sat on its hands.
