Hi, we have booked directly with Air Canada online for an itinerary Perth-Vancouver, with a Qantas domestic leg Perth to Sydney followed by the AC flights to and in Canada. Two questions: firstly, will we be able to do online check in and get boarding passes for both QF and AC legs in advance and will this have to be done separately for both airlines, and secondly, will the check in at Perth flag our luggage right through to Canada or will we have to collect them at Syd domestic and transfer them ourselves to Syd international terminal? I have not not the heart to try queueing to Qantas for the usual half a day and I know it is what they say/do here that counts rather than the more helpful Air Canada.

It all hinges on whether you have an overnight in SYD eg if you fly PER/SYD during the day on a Tuesday arriving that evening will your AC flight the following day on Wednesday, your bag would only be checked to SYD as there is no overnight storage at SYD so you would need to take your bags with you to your overnight accommodation then checkin with AC at SYD T1 the next day for the SYD/YVR flight.

If you're on the red eye PER/SYD with an immediate connection to AC serveral hours later and provided the QF PER/SYD flight is on the same ticket as the AC SYD/YVR flight which it sounds like it is, then QF in PER can definitely through check the bags to YVR. Make sure you go to a CSA not a self serve kiosk otherwise the SSK will short tag the bags to SYD. In addition to a baggage interline agreement, QF and AC also have an IATCI agreement so QF in PER should be able to give you your AC boarding pass SYD/YVR so all you need to do on arrival at SYD T3.

It's more important to pre-allocate seats that to do OLCI with either airline. QF don't charge domestically to reserve seats (except for exit rows on the A330 PER to East Coast vv) and I'm not sure whether AC charge but I think not. You just need to decide your preferred seating on the 772 3x3x3 config.

A call to reservations is not necessary.

Thanks for that. There is only a short term around in Syd so I guess that makes it likely they will tag cases to Canada. Would I do online check in with Qantas for boarding passes for all legs?
