Virgin Australia has confirmed that it will open a lounge in Cairns in 2013. It will be located opposite the Qantas Club and will be based on the airlines regional lounge model.

You want them to rip out soft furnishings throughout the terminal, install a Westfield foodcourt, and dispose of the jetbridges?

OOL,BNE,MKY,TSV,CNS.
While they are moving upmarket they are still very focused on QLD, which after FY11's loss does not seam like the best strategy to me... I would think upgrades of ADL & LAX would be more important.

Untill there is another flood/ cyclone season, I mean sure, they should have lounges up there but I think there are others that should have priority over QLD, to further diversify.

It didnt affect the FIFO market too much, more the VFR in SEQ market, something they have moved away from.

I'm sure they put their lounges where they think they will add the most value.

And how much it costs to build them is probably a part of that. CNS has had a space sitting there since the terminal was refurbed so it will probably be much cheaper to get that lounge set up than, for example, OOL probably was. TSV is taking advantage of terminal works getting done, as is CBR and PER. I think in MKY they just took over existing space too? So the airport owner was probably happy to see some revenue.

Yes, although DRW is not the case, which explains the slow progress for that one!

The good thing about this as far as I am concerned is that, like at OOL, Qantas can't assume that if it pulls out of CNS-SYD or CNS altogether, its patrons will obediently swap to J*.

If its going "opposite" the Qantas Club, then it wont have a view of anything?

Its all offices on that side from memory? I have been up into the offices once, and im sure based on where i walked it was around there :)

There is a lounge already opposite the QP, and yes it does not have a view.

With QF having effectively pulled out of CNS for work flights to SYD its great to see Virgin putting a lounge up here - they now have better spread of flights to both SYD and BNE for work travel, so will be great to have somewhere to wait and grab a coffee in the morning.

I was talking about the competition being an absolute bloodbath and sales occurring every single week.

MKY was part of the terminal refurb as well.

That's the Megan Walter Lounge, but is a VIP lounge only. It has a view... but it looks over the Terminal roof and toward the domestic car park

But yes, the Lounge would more likely be "next to" the current Qantas Club, overlooking the tarmac.

There is a large vacant office area "opposite" the Qantas Club, but that is currently landside. CAPL are about to take over some of that area for office space for its Terminal Managers and Customer Service Officers.

I heard some time ago that CAPL made Qantas Club take up its option on the space for expanding the Qantas Club, otherwise they were going to butt any potential Virgin Lounge up against it, therefore limiting the future potential expansion of the Qantas Club. It doesn't mean Qantas are going to expand the Club, just ensures there's room for it to do so if it wanted to in the future.

Therefore, I think the Virgin Lounge will have to be a little bit further walk down the corridor but will overlook the Tarmac.

I definitely think this is a great thing for CNS, and wonder if it will mean a re-think of any QF strategy again, similar to OOL.

Well as an FNQ expat I'd definitely welcome that - it's a horribly expensive place to get to during peak periods.
