Shrek had a little trouble this morning trying to access the QP in SYD T2.
He flew into T1 on a BA flight ( J class) purchased and ticketed by QF with a QF flight number and was flying out on OT. On arrival at the T2 QP he showed them both his inbound BP and OT boarding pass. The Dragons were adamant that he wasn't allowed access as flying OT. He then produced a copy of his itinerary showing the QF flight this morning. Still refused. He then pulled up the lounge access rules on his iphone and they still refused. He asked them to call a supervisor which they did and the supervisor stated on the phone to the dragon that he wasn't allowed access  Phone conversation terminated and the dragon relented, said that as he was only going to be in the lounge for a short time ( 30 mins) and the supervisor couldn't attend to explain the rules to him that they would let him in on this occasion

In the meantime a little queue was forming behind him.

As he was settling down for a cuppa, ten minutes later the Dragon appeared, looking very sheepish and apologised profusely for incorrectly denying him access in the first place.
Not the end of the world of course but IMO its pretty poor of the T2 staff on this morning to get it so wrong.

So basically someone has a job with Qantas and doesn't know how to do it properly.

Seriously, when your job involves looking at boarding passes and changing flights - you should know the rules inside out. Anything less is nothing more than an under-performing employee that needs an immediate performance review.

Glad to hear it was a happy ending for Shrek though :)

Does Shrek have any QF or oneworld status?

In any case, assuming I read the rules correctly, without status then he should've gained access on account of the rules for Qantas International Business customers (i.e. connecting from a QFi J flight grants access; 1 guest only if the onward flight is also QF).

A funny aside is that if the ticket was marketed as BA, then he would not have access unless he was a QF WP.

Not good on the dragons for getting it wrong, but admittedly I have to throw a couple of points their way for finding him later and apologising. Apologies are in very short supply in the airline industry.

Yes, QF WP as per the post title.
He was pleasantly surprised at the apology and kudos to the dragon for seeking him out. I still think its pretty poor show to have to point out the lounge access rules to staff who should know them as part of their job.

Do'h! This afternoon coffee is not working!!

For sure. That said, had there been no apology, on a scale from -10 to 10, the dragon would've been scored a -7 (or less depending on how much attitude she put up). With the apology, it's more like -3.

I turned up there with two guests in May flying Jetstar to Melbourne and was initially told I could only have one guest. Same behaviour and adamant I could only have one guest. Then said OK this time. Would not accept that they could be wrong and embarrassing for me with two very infrequent fliers. All they need is a card with a print out from the web site laminated. Gee how hard would that be to organise for people that dont know their own rules.

I know that at LHR T5, the BA dragons have a flip chart or something which has such rules explained in big letters for them.

Unfortunately at times, this chart has been incorrect:!:

Confusion with lounge access rules? Well knock me over with a slowly-but-increasingly devalued Platinum card!

#, ^, &, *, !, ~, ++ . . .

The recent thread on AFF about the SMH article and confusing baggage rules just goes to show how unbelievable some of it is. I have some pity for lounge agents and check-in staff who must remember a plethora of rules and more and more footnotes that often contradict the main text or create even further ambiguity.

They really didn't know a WP can bring in 2 guests??? That'd be funny if it wasn't so bad!

Could someone please clarify if SYD T2 Qantas club has allowed access to them in the following situation:

Flying Rex (as no early QantasLink flights to regional destination)
Returning that evening on QantasLink
Don't yet have Qantas boarding pass (can't checkin online as combined Rex-Qantas booking)

According to the rules one can have entry as I will be "travelling on any flight the same day that shows Qantas, Jetstar Airlines[SUP]+[/SUP] or a oneworld flight number on your ticket"
However I have found T2 staff rather obstinate about this, and can't stomach another argument at 5.45 am in the morning!!

Thanks

I see you're a QF Platinum.

Can't say I've had the experience (let alone had ZL and QF on the same booking), but you should be OK. Having the QF boarding pass in advance would help a lot. If they need evidence you're travelling that day, they should be able to bring up your record and see your booking. If they can't, perhaps you can do this (e.g. if you have a smartphone, or if you print your itinerary - latter not desirable, though...)

If they continue to say "no" and won't look up your booking, please ensure you send a very stern email to QF about this. And report back here, since we'll do the same.

I thought entitlement to lounge access was fairly clear on the Qantas website.

I can understand how a lounge staff member can get it wrong but a supervisor? One would think at that level they would know most terms and conditions without need to look them up.
