I am wanting to book a J award (ideally mJASA) SYD - SCL in Nov 14, returning Dec 14. Would appreciate some advice/ suggestions and confirmation of my findings to date. I'm trying to get my plans clear prior to the seats being released.

- From what I have seen and read to date QF don't offer any award seats on QF27/QF28. Award seats are only available on the QF code share with LAN via AKL. My preference is to do QF27/28 as I don't really want to stop in AKL. In addition my mother may take this trip with me and she really would prefer to go direct and may have to buy a PE revenue ticket and request J upgrade on points (LAN of course doesn't offer PE).

- Can anyone let me know why award seats aren't offered on QF27/8? Do they ever become available?

- I have seen QF27/8 available via AA. Again, can anyone let me know why the direct flights are available via AA and not QFF?
I have just about enough point to book via AA, being only a couple of 1000 short. I can buy some SPG points and transfer over to meet the gap. I can't see any regular pattern of availability of flights through AA, for example SCL - SYD seems to be available regularly on Wednesday, but not necessarily on Sat and Mon. Does anyone know if seats are released for each day it flies?

- I would also like to be able to get my mother a J seat, however am having trouble finding a seat for 1, let alone 2. Does anyone have any experience of getting 2 J seats on this route?

Appreciate any thoughts on the above - thanks all. :)

from my experience (admittedly I was looking for economy) the Syd - Scl flights were the hardest to get for my RTW trip. I think they regularly have PE flights on the direct flight, but not sure what else.

I was actually happy to go through Auckland, in fact I am going the day before on a Qantas flight, having 23 hours 10 mins in Auckland then going on the LAN flight (with a QF number).

I recently spent a good deal of time booking a friends itinerary RTW. They also wanted to return from South America on points on QF. After ringing QF, the lady on the phone told me that the route is almost a monopoly, carries high loads, and therefore they don't offer award seats (because they can normally get money for the same seat).

I had to book my friends home via LAX, but managed to get them 2x J seats For December 30th.

Suggest you look at via LAX if you really want QF J award seats.

South America is an interesting destination and I quickly found that there were zilch award seats anytime let alone peak season.
Decided to pass on the cheap aa j fare to bas and fly with the roo/lan to scl.
Outbound ex brisvegas works well with a short hop on ek to akl then the long haul with lan.. Inbound with qf through sidderney.
A fair price found was a bit over 7k (twice the aa price).. but I was bluntly told 4 months out to book and pay today or no cigar.
Popular route it seems.

Thanks for the replies everyone. You have confirmed that this is not an easy route to find award seats on, let alone J award seats.

I think they regularly have PE flights on the direct flight, but not sure what else.
Thanks ferseaI haven't seen any availability on QF27/8 in any class, but if you have seen PE seats I will have another look.

Thanks for the suggestion BorisI did briefly consider going via LAX, but then slapped myself around the head :) At least I can see some availability on the QF code share flights, and I would much rather a stop in AKL than going via LAX.

Things must have changed. ..exactly a year ago I got a Jasa for +1 on this route....the Qf flight over and the La codeshare on the way back...I did book at the T-353 day mark. tho..

I will keep looking kph, and am glad to hear that sometimes the direct flight is available. Although I don't need to book until Nov I am looking every day for the 'just released' seats, and there has only been availability on the QF code share flights.
