Hi
About to book an award flight SYD-HKG and return in J class for the dates we need to travel.
Currently J class is only avail in the SYD-HKG leg and will have to return in economy.

Is there any likelyhood that J seats will become available closer to the time of travel, or is it normally a case of what's available now is usually it. We are not travelling until June next year (along way off I know) but want to book the award seats now under the 'Classic' award system just in case Qantas change the rules and 'classic' award seats disappear or less are offered.

I'll book the award seats now and then if J becomes avail for the return leg and I swap, what will the points penalty be if we travel on the same day. From reading Qantas site, I understand it to be 5,000 per ticket for a class upgrade- am I reading that correctly ?

You could ring Qantas, pay the penalty 2500 ff booking fee per persosn and see if they have any J seats on a code share carrier, such as CX etc. If this info is incorrect, others will correct it but I think you can do that.

If 'J' class seats were available via codeshare with CX, wouldn't they be shown when I request availability of seats online at Qantas website ?? Or don't codeshare flights in 'J' show via the qantas award website., and can only be made via a phone call to qantas

Can only be made by phone

No CX flights appear on the online tool. I would not expect HKG-SYD to become available either. We had to route HKG-SIN-SYD to get premium cabins...
