LHR Charges

As I understand it, there are airports, or cities or countries, to avoid if possible because of high costs. To put together a RTW or One World program, because of the airlines most commonly available (QF, BA), a destination anywhere in Europe normally transits through London, usually LHR. Is it correct that just transitting through London incurs the costs associated with there?

So, if I wanted to travel from JNB to, say, DUB or FRA, I would have to first touch down in London. Is this charged to me?

Thanks, Bill

If only transiting the UK (in most cases this means staying less than 24 hours) then you are exempt from the UK Air Passenger Duty charge.

As NM states, the LHR (and other UK ports? - I've only exited UK from LHR) charges only apply to stopovers (>24 hrs), and not transits (<=24 hrs).

Also, the charges are based on cabin flown and distance flown, so if in Y and flying to Europe it's a relatively low charge, but if flying in F (or any non-Y cabin) and to Australia it's a high charge.

They also do not apply to UK domestic flights.

OK, thanks, that is reassuring.

As it doesn't matter where I land in western Europe, which cities or countries have the more attractive charges. When last there about 6 years ago, we landed at Paris CDG and found it a breeze compared to LHR.
